Source text - Spanish SECULARIZACIÓN DEL CONOCIMIENTO Y ANTIAUTORITARISMO
s t u d i o ru m m e d i e val.
siglo X I I y condujo a los reconocimientos y privilegios que
1158. El gremio boloñés constituíauna u n i versitas scholar
i u m, comunidad de estudiantes, intensamente comprom
i n t e r p retación teológica puramente religiosa o mística.
r s i t a r i o s .
y maestros.
m a e s t ro s .
futuros cuadrosde la administración novo h i s p ana—
A fines del siglo X V I I I hubo otros movimientos estudiantiles
las reformas liberales de Carlos I I I. Las manifestaciones
losjesuitas iniciaron eldiscurso independentista y sudocta
p e rose oponían allibre cambiomodernizadordel imperio,
secularizador y antiautoritario. Es posible rastrear un
conjunto de movimientos universitarios que porespacio

Translation - English THE SECULARIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND ANTI-AUTHORITARIANISM
Student and teacher movements make up one of the oldest and most entrenched university practices. These movements originated with the surge in the medieval universitas studiorum. University activism continues today nine centuries after the origin of the organization of the union of the intellectuals and some years before the first cessatio that, contextually, had all of the characteristics of a student strike, and at the same time an academic and political one.
Much like how universities have changed since 1088, these movements have had a diverse character in each historical moment and the university movements are an inseparable part of the structured, intellectual work in academic life; furthermore they have been a reflection, vehicle and key element of the impact of the professors, students and universities on social life.
The first university movement on record was a student movement, which occurred in Bologna in the middle of the 12th century and lead to the recognition and privileges that were negotiated with Emperor Frederick Barbarroja I in 1158. The Bologna union constituted a universitas scholarium, student community, intensely committed in the Investitures Controversy; empire and papacy sought to impose their own forms of political dominion and control of property. Through the hiring of professors and the constitution of national colleges, the students of Bologna had begun to liberate thought and education within Catholic walls and monasteries. Imerio, also known as Warnerio, was the educator of the students at Bologna, no doubt supported from high levels by the Holy Roman Empire, in order to re-codify Roman law; later they would do the same with Canon law. The legal sphere – secular or ecclesiastical – thus dresses itself with the prestige of reason and the sanction of the academy, and sought to remove all purely religious or mystical theological interpretation.
The university legal consultants contributed legality and legitimacy to nonbelievers and secular clergy in every position.
In conflict with the bishop and with the viceroy due to questions of how it applied the laws of reprisal in the everyday life of the innocent students, the guild left the city; at which point the corporations began to take advantage of the needs of teachers and students. The conditioned return of the universitas to the city, and the prospect of new strikes, allowed the guild (meaning the universitas) to obtain, first from the emperor and later from the Pope, protection, special privileges and guarantees of certain autonomy from both powers.
A short time later a similar thing happened in Paris while a debate about universal thought took place in which the king and the Pope both competed for the support of the theologies who began to form, develop and expand the ideology of reason. Here, the cessatio that preceded the negotiations of recognition composed of as both teachers and students; the Parisians formed a universitas scholarium et magistrorum, a community of students and teachers.
The depth and intensity of combat that intellectuals can achieve for the autonomy of their work opposite of the scepter and crosier were made evident in Paris; amongst other things, with the bloody tribulations of Peter Abelard.
The first American university movement seems to have taken place in Puebla in 1647, when Viceroy Archbishop Palafox y Mendoz, in order to impose his education and ecclesiastical reforms, entered into a dispute with the Jesuits, who occupied the majority of what we today call higher education.
The Spanish Crown and Church had resolved to impede the members of the Jesuits from extending their intellectual influence and limit their participation in education. Because of the viceregal and Episcopal stance, the students of the Jesuits – many of whom were children of the colonial businessmen or future officials of the administration of New Spain – protested at the beginning of a conflict the lasted six years and concluded with the virtual defeat of the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
At the end of the 18th century there were other student movements to protest the expulsion of the Jesuits and to demand the annulment of the order of exile that formed part of Charles the Third’s liberal reforms. The demonstrations of Patzcuaro, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi produced sixty-nine additional demonstrations.
As farmers, missionaries, notable academics of higher education, investigators of diverse specialties and the development of new technology, the Jesuits initiated independent discourse and their scholarly, historic and philosophic foundation. Furthermore, for almost two centuries they formed in their own lecture halls as well as those in the Royal University of New Spain, all of the officials of the Spanish colony. Many of the students at the time were creoles who were leaders in the War of Independence and the Reform War and notable politicians from the dawn of Mexican independence to the struggle against the French intervention and the restoration of the republic.
The defeat of the Jesuits at the end of the 18th century was the first and most fruitful victory of Hispanic liberalism over the body of intellectual organizers of society and the most powerful ideological structures of the era. Certainly the defeated Jesuits represented reason, creative thought, the development of new technologies and the search for the political autonomy of the colonies, but they opposed the free, modernizing change of the empire, the openness made them powerful Protestants, to the estrangement of the “spiritual power” of Rome.
A glimpse at the recent history of the universities of Mexico, in which we stop only in the participation of the college students in the social movements initiated in 1910 and in the struggle for autonomy in 1929, at the one extreme we would have, chronologically, the movements headed by the students in 1968 and those of 1986-1990. None were local events; they personified two of the most relevant moments of the contemporary college world.
For nine centuries, some of the most different university riots have had a secularized and antiauthoritarian character in common. It is possible to track a group of university movements that for a span of nearly a millennium has constituted one of the necessary cultural channels, we would say indispensible, to establish and develop secular knowledge, in order to establish and preserve the autonomy of the intellectual work with the respect to political and religious powers and in order to make the whole of political relations flexible.
If that we could only observe the turning points of those revolts from character, origin and diverse contents, it would be sufficient to classify them as democratic or at least to recognize them as fundamentals of complex social democratization process. This, of course, demands the examination of the other elements present in those revolts and processes, amongst other things because it is what will permit the discovery of the details of each case and clarify the academic, political and historical generalizations that they constantly suggest.

Spanish to English: 2012 Mayan Prophecies General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Sitler organiza a los agentes: 1.- Independent Researcher (Like John Major Jenkins, while scholars who have understood the basic components of the Long Count calendar for a century or more, and have some focused attention on the potential significance of its date), 2.- Maya Participants In The 2012 Movement (New Age teachers actually are Maya or claim partial Mayan Ancestry, like Humbatz Men, a Yukatek Maya), 3.- New Age Leaders Of The 2012 Phenomenon (Argüelles is merely the best-known teacher in an expanding international group that includes dozens of highly inventive and often eccentric individuals reaching out to the New Age public with ideas concerning 2012), 4.- World Renewal Among The Maya (few contemporary Mayan communities that in some ways parallel the 2012 movement and that eventually may provide additional indigenous cultural fodder for its adherents). Defesche (2008, p. 28) encuentra limitada that 2012 speculation is restricted to a "New Age Appropriation of an Ancient Mayan Calendar" alone and this is certainly not the case. Defesche propose to distinguish five ideal-typical categories of 2012 speculation. Como ella advierte, keep in mind that these categories are only analytical concepts designed to organize an overwhelming amount of data, and that most of the specific instances of 2012 theory will fall into more than one of these. The five categories of “2012ology” that she distinguish are: 1.- Calendar Reform Movements (José Argüelles y el movimiento de arte planetario, los hermanos McKenna), 2.- Neo-Shamanic (psychedelic) Millennialism (Daniel Pinchbeck y el retorno de Quetzalcóatl, Carlos Castaneda ), 3.- Conspiracy-based 2012 speculation (David Icke y la conspiración reptiliana), 4.- (Pseudo)Scientific 2012 theory (David Wilcock “Divine Cosmos”, Jenkins “Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: the True Meaning of the Maya Calendar”) and finally, 5.- Casual and spirituality-based 2012 speculation (New Age, Ambientalismo, Mercantilismo).
Sus profecías son extraídas del Izapa´s ball court monuments encode the galactic alignment of era-2012, as well as serving as a prophecy and a spiritual teaching, for example:
“On the far side of the ball corut (in Izapa) a monument depicts Hunahpu standing over a fallen Seven Macaw. Viewing this monument with an awareness of the future alignment that will occur behind it, the Creation Myth story was reiterated for the ancient initiate: Seven Macaw (the ego) must fall before One Hunahpu (the divine self) can be reborn. The old polar god dies, and the new galactic god is born… This combination of astronomy, mythology, and spiritual teaching encodes what I identify as the 2012 prophecy. The scenario applies to the transition point at the end of the age” (Major Jenkins, 2007, p. 58).
I will take a small leap and propose that Mayan mystics practiced a yoga and breathing meditation, wich in Asia is called Vipassana Meditation…”
The maya (1966) and Breaking the Maya Code . Londres.
The History Channel alone has produced no less than 3 documentaries (and more on the way) entirely devoted to sensationally ‘exploring’ apocalyptic visions of 2012: “The Lost Book of Nostradamus”, which culminates in a prediction by 2012 theorists Jay Weidner and Vincent Bridges that this “lost book” actually predicts cataclysm in 2012 (Witheside, 2009).
Witheside (2011) menciona que the extremely popular sci-fi television series The X-Files concluded the series by revealing the final secret, the plot the whole series had been culminating toward, that the final alien invasion was to take place on December 22, 2012 (McKenna’s date), even mentioning the Mayan calendar y coincide con Defesche sobre la importancia de ésto ya que acercó a un public mucho más amplio el 2012, de lo que the relatively obscure esoteric books could ever accomplish on their own (Witheside, 2011).
Se observa que The 2012 meme is gaining ever more spreading power due to Emmerich’s and other films, an ever-increasing book publication rate, a vast number of websites, more and more popular media coverage, including several mentions and interviews on Fox News and articles in the New York Times, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone (among many others). (Witheside, 2009). Eso genera una demanda As an even more diverse variety of alternative media sources continue to develop, 2012 seems to get its foot in the door of each of them for example: 2012 iPhone applications like Ultimate 2012, (which you can buy from Apple for 99 cents). As this phenomenon becomes more and more popular it seems also more and more important to have available a critical view of it as it becomes increasingly embedded in people’s worldviews (Witheside, 2009).

This contribution tries to analize how beliefs, continously being controlled by the media and mass marketing, can become a global product. As a case study I use “the 2012 phenomenon”, which includes a series of beliefs that range from comprehensive world views like the supposed Mayan prophecy of the end of the world, New Age beliefs, the Ecological movement, “scientific” discourses refering to solar explosions, planetary alignments , etc.; which transform themselves into a hybrid narrative as pointed out by Stiler (2006), Defesche (2008), Whitesides (2011) and Hoopes (2011).
The hypothesis is that through the generation of interpretative frameworks around the 2012 phenomon cognitive links are produced which reconstruct and mix the narratives in such a manner that, thanks to the dynamic marketing and communication around the phenomona that become to be know throughout the world, in this case, the issue is with what was a question about the Mayan calendar in particular. A considerable part of this narrative is being constructed in the Cultural Industries which are being mediated by the market. Because of this, the extended marketing around this phenomenon is the key in order to promoting its difussion and generating vast economic resources, through the means of products such as: books, movies, television documentaries, websites, tourist packages, magazines, etc. In this work I will focus on the analysis of some of the products that have successfully resulted in terms of demand and a new-found significance. I will also look at the concept of Cultural Industry, as understood by UNESCO (2006) which defines cultural industrias principally as good and services protected by the rights of the author. Bustamante (2003) sees in them a series of symbolic creationes that, multiplied in numerous copies in matierial support or in material support, they are going to find their nrecptors. They are not simply “diseminators” of culture or intermediaries between creators and consumers, but more influencial acts which constitute and structure the majority culture. Because of this one would have to examin and identify how they overcome differences and take advantage of the similarities in distinct belief systems in order to achieve globalization.
For students the continous process of organization and negotiation of the world view or ideology around the 2012 phenomenon I found which is convienent to the hypothesis is the Figierio’s methodology (1999) concerning frame alignment which is achieved though small works of interactive and communicative social mobilization. It would help to establish a connection between the interpretive orientations of the individuals and the products of the Cultural Industries, in the form of some interests, values and beliefs of the individuals which are seen as congruent and complementary with the proposed feelings, activites, objectives and ideology that the Cultural Industries suggest.
On one hand I will present the convergence of objective data presenting products of the Cultural Industries and the levels of subjective importance such as metaphors and constructed narratives around this phenomenon. I will complie these final elemente by means of Virtual Ethonography, put forth by Hine (2001) which I am carrying out in the online forum of the Spanish group GSE 2012 (2012 Spanish Survival Group ) and conducted interviews at the 2012 March Equinox in Chichén Itzá, where individual subjects and collectives converged around the Mayan Culture, many of them influenced by the 2012 phenomenon. Through the metaphors and narrations expressed here I will attempt to find the foundations, arguments and esthetics that make the millenarian discourses meaningful in different contexts and enable them to trasnationalize themselves.
The 2012 Phenomenon and Cultural Industries.
Introduction
“It is frequently announced that the 21st century will be religous” annouced Maffesoli (2009, p. 195) for him it is not an unfounded opinion when one observes the massive return of Messianic sects and recent political developments which cannot be overlooked. This correspondes to a time-space in which the disorder is surpassing the limits of tolerance of the historical sistem, because of this many are talking of the emergence of postmodernism. Ávila analyzes how the time in which we live is classified as the “Era of Communication”, “of Information” and how it would seem that such a statement itself would assure the arrival of the superior state of human development. Nonetheless, there is growing dissent of social problems that are presenting themselves in said “era”, which must be due to constant communication and excessive information. (Ávila, 2000, p. 165). According to Maffesoli we find how “spiritual climates” exist that do not leave anyone or anything unscathed. In this postmodern, globalized world by mediated marketing process, one can see a kind of atmosphere where books, television and movies such as: The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or a television series like The X Files, Secret Circle, Supernatural, V. Vizitas., Fringe, Twilight, etc. are mixing snippets of diverse beliefs.
In a globalizing world geographic regions grow closer with mass media, the news that before took a long time to spread, if it spread beyond the surrounding area, today are displayed at the same time and in various versions in only one page or on one screen. And more than likely the most castrophic of which will occupy the opening segments on the television, the radio, in the written press and, almost instanteously, on web pages. The perception or sensation is generated that “things are occurring that have never occurred before”, and in a Judeochristian culture where Millenialism has existed for centuries, it is very probable to begin to interpret these facts in a millenarian or apocolyptical fashion . It is hardly suprising that explanations in belief systems are sought that give a kind of certainty about the future, many time forming a hybridization of these beliefs. The products that the Cultural industries offer in order to answer this reality of “unprecidented events”, in such a way that with snippets of the diverse beliefs they can condense different elements and still create a consistent discourse.
This contribution tries to analize how beliefs, continously being controlled by the media and mass marketing, can become a global product. Today globalization uses the markets to rationalize the mediums and processes through which the beliefs are diseminated, however they are emerging sociohistoric processes that cannot be reduced to merely technological mediums, but neither can they be understood without them I will use the 2012 phenomenon as a case study, which includes a series of millenarianists beliefs that have spread to a global level, principally through the participitation of transnational media actors. When faced with these mixtures of beliefs, we should ask ourselves “What makes these different elements consistent?” The hypothesis is that through the generation of interpretative frameworks around the New Age narrative cognitive links are produced which reconstruct and mix the narratives in such a manner that, thanks to the dynamic marketing and communication around the phenomona that become to be know throughout the world, in this case, the issue is with what was a question about the Mayan calendar in particular. A considerable part of this narrative is being constructed by the Cultural Industries which are being mediated by the market.
What is the 2012 Phenomenon?
I use the term “2012 phenomenon”, which had already been put forward academically, originating from the social sciences, it refers to the millenarianism related with the 2012 Mayan Prophecy, like the creation of cultural artifacts, activities or reactions. This phenomenon has been studied by Sitler (2006), Defesche (2008), Hoopes (2011), Bastos, Tally & Zamora (2011) and Withesides (2009).
Sitler (2006)categorizes it by the main sources, and how the enthusiasts have selectively propriated elements of the Mayan culture, sometimes through a collaboration of various Mayan religious contemporaries that gave a “touch of indigenous legitimacy” to the theories. Sitler organizes the agents: 1.- Independent Researcher (Like John Major Jenkins, while scholars who have understood the basic components of the Long Count calendar for a century or more, and have some focused attention on the potential significance of its date), 2.- Maya Participants In The 2012 Movement (New Age teachers actually are Maya or claim partial Mayan Ancestry, like Humbatz Men, a Yukatek Maya), 3.- New Age Leaders Of The 2012 Phenomenon (Argüelles is merely the best-known teacher in an expanding international group that includes dozens of highly inventive and often eccentric individuals reaching out to the New Age public with ideas concerning 2012), 4.- World Renewal Among The Maya (few contemporary Mayan communities that in some ways parallel the 2012 movement and that eventually may provide additional indigenous cultural fodder for its adherents). Defesche (2008, p. 28) findings in reference to the 2012 speculation are restricted to a "New Age Appropriation of an Ancient Mayan Calendar" alone and this is certainly not the case. Defesche proposes to distinguish five ideal-typical categories of 2012 speculation. Like she advises, keep in mind that these categories are only analytical concepts designed to organize an overwhelming amount of data, and that most of the specific instances of 2012 theory will fall into more than one of these. The five categories of “2012ology” that she distinguishes are: 1.- Calendar Reform Movements (José Argüelles y el movimiento de arte planetario, the McKenna brothers), 2.- Neo-Shamanic (psychedelic) Millennialism (Daniel Pinchbeck and the return of Quetzalcóatl, Carlos Castaneda), 3.- Conspiracy-based 2012 speculation (David Icke and the Reptilian Conspiracy), 4.- (Pseudo)Scientific 2012 theory (David Wilcock “Divine Cosmos”, Jenkins “Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: the True Meaning of the Maya Calendar”) and finally, 5.- Casual and spirituality-based 2012 speculation (New Age, the Ecology movement, Mercantilism).
This phenonmenon is constructed around the supposed ancient Mayan prophecy associated with the baktun 13 and its correlation with the date December 21, 2012 as the end of an era, or in some interpretations, the end of the world.
The Maya, from the Classical Period (approximately 250-900 B.C.), generated three calendars: The Tzolkin which contains 260 days, the Haab which contains 365 (between both they form the Calendar Round ) and that of the long count which measures more extense periods of time, cycles of the 13 baktunes, where each baktune is 20 katunes, it is equivalente to approximately 140,000 days. The Long Count shows much longer periods of time than the cycles of the Calendar Round. The Long Count is a conception of time like a endless road (Torres, 2009). the 13 baktun began on August 11, 3114 B.C. The Mayan calendar system known as Long Count will return to zero on December 21, 2012, to restart its 1,872,000 day, or 5,125.36 year cycle(Aveni 2010) and it will restart the 14 baktun, until arriving at 20 baktunes which make up a piktún. If the calendar indicates the end of the Long Count cycle correctly, the interpretation that there exists a Mayan prophecy is taken from a majority of eclesiastical based interpretations, whether it be from documents like Popol Vuh, Chilam Balam, the Dresden codex, or the archaelogical findings like the Izapa Stela, Cobá, the Pascal’s sarcofogas in Palenque or the zoomorphic monutments of Quiriguá (Bastos, Tally & Zamora, 2011).
The phenomenon of the said Mayan prophecies initially originated because Jesús Argüelles, in the mid 1980s claimed to telepathecally receive them from cosmic beings; however, Michael D. Coe had already published “The Maya” in 1966 (Withesides, 2009). Nonetheless various authors pointed to the The Maya Factor as the book that started the Mayan boom (Defesche, 2008; Hoopes, 2011; Sitler, 2006; Castellanos, 2011; Bastos, Tally & Zamora, 2011). Argüelles fused a series of contrasting natural elements in is premonitions, generating a hybri narration: ancient religions in tune to the eternal renewal, the Biblical Apocolypse, the Koran, the I Ching or the Germanic Runes, amongst other and he correlated them with mathematic information, physics and astronomy, the base for the configuration of this discourse is the Mayan calendar system and the telepathic messages that he said to have received from the cosmos(Castellanos, 2011). For example:
“As it is explained in the Tzolkin, the harmonic unit of the Mayans, the galatic code that governs the radiant engery, is the primary source that informs and vitalizes the DNA code of life, representing through its smbolic counterpart that is the I Ching.... (Argüelles, 2004, p. 99)...the numeric symbolism of the Book of Revelations possesses a profoundly Mayan tone. The fact Christ is the thirteenth person in a group of twelve disciples is of the utmost importance. There is also an constant emphasis on the number seven repeated in any form, like in the mystic foundation throughout the whole revelation; and finally, the number of the 144,000 chosen, which is the same number of kines that is in a bakturl” (Argüelles, 2004, p. 150) .
From this interpretation given by Argüelles and complimented by The Maya Prophecies by Gilbert and Cotterell (1995) the break from the “seven Mayan prophecies”, that Fernando Malkún developed in The Dreams of Time: The Seven Mayan Prophecies. Where in seven videos he exhibits seven premonitions with Argüelles’s ideas and information of another nature: Mayan, Biblical, esoteric, climate change, world chaos and part of the approach of the “galactic ray of synchronization that occurs every 5,125 years” which will bring changes (Castellanos, 2011), here breaking from the 7 omens that include wars, the breaking of the magnetic poles and their magnetic inversion, a comet that will place the Earth in danger. These prophecies are spread like events that will follow, in the wake of what would signify the end of the Long Count.
2012 also “coincides” with the long anticipated wait on the behalf of the mystics of the Age of Aquarius, or those that guarantee the Apocolypse will take shape, including the “parallels” myths or prophecies which have been revitalized (Morelli, 2011). Here is an example of a reinterpretation that Daniel Pinckhbec made: According to the Hopis, we are actually completeing the Fourth cycle of the World - Tuwaqachi, “Complete World” - on the border of the transition, or the emergence of the Fifth World, with various other worlds following. In each of the previous conditions, humanity eventually lost its good sense, bringing the ruin through destructive practices, war, abuse y misuse of technologies, and the loss of the sacred connection (Daniel Pinckhbec: 2012 The Return of Quetzalcoatl. Jeremy P. Tarcher/Penguin, NY, 2007, Pág. 381).
On the other hand John Major Jenkins, who wrote “Mayan Cosmogenesis 2012” offers a more elaborated version founded in arqueological and anthropological studies of the ancient and contemporany Maya, such as the lecture of the Tzolkin and the Izapa Stela (Bastos, Tally & Zamora, 2011; Castellanos, 2011). His prophecies are extracted from the Izapa´s ball court monuments which encoded the galactic alignment of era-2012, as well as serving as a prophecy and a spiritual teaching, for example:
“On the far side of the ball court (in Izapa) a monument depicts Hunahpu standing over a fallen Seven Macaw. 58).
The author makes use of an interpretative resource of elements of Hindu, Buddism, Christianity, astrology, astonomy, archaelogy, anthropology, epigraphy and conspiracy theories in order to elaborate a complicated and unified para-scientific story of 2012 (Bastos, Tally & Zamora, 2011): “I will take a small leap and propose that Mayan mystics practiced a yoga and breathing meditation, wich in Asia is called Vipassana Meditation…”
On the basis of different combined sources beneath an appropriate criteria of lectoral archtype. Jenkin sconnects the Maya tradition with the universal sentiment of the New Age with that which generates his reinterpretation and its comparision with other practices, because of this he gets caught up mentioning various times what is strictly scientific.
These authors that I have mentioned ( and there are many more that exist) elaborate parallels with Hinduism for example the “Vishnu Purana” as well as some of the most ancient chinese philosophy, the “I Ching”. These are the followers fo the theory of the 2012 transformation or of the cataclysim that could end the world assuming that all of these texts and prophecies that conclude in December 2012 as the date in which humanity will experience a radical change in the form of a spiritual revolution, or for others in the form of a planetary catastrofe. Hoopes (2011) sees in this phenomenon a fascinating intersection of astronomy and culture. Call attention to the origins of the phenomenon overcoming the formulated observations by respected Mayan academics and its promotion has included the speculative declarations by scholars, some of which have doctorates (Hoopes, 2011), such as the case with José Argüelles. Because of this the 2012 phenomenon is consecuently a seasonal speculation by experts with academic credentials, but strongly influenced by New Age beliefs, in addition to the references to past cultures.
In this work it is not important to know if there really exists an interpretation pertinent to the remains of the Mayas, or if it will pass or not. What they look for is to analyze the collective and cultural dimensions that they bring to reflect on the multiple factors of diverse order that came together in this phenomenon. It pretends to go beyond the analysis of traditional rumor that they pretend to center the attention on the origen of the rumors and on the elaborate models of circulation with the goal of being familiar with the manner of producing them, directing them and combating them. Problems between truth, falsehood and objectivity of the phenomenon are not the interest, but the regime of production that is possible to think and formulate in a determined, historic moment (Zires, 2001, p.93). In this manner the cognitive points could be analyzed through the construction of credibility of the phenomenon and its versions. These points are derived from multiple discourses (oral, written, audiovisual) that circulate in a cultural context, not only by the subjects, but also by the Cultural Industries.
The Spread of the Beliefs
The Cultural Industries are those sectors that are directly involved with the creation, production and distribution of goods and services that are of a cultural nature and they are usually protected by copyright. The cultural goods and services are those whose economic value is primarily derived from their cultural value and they have the potencial for the creation of wealth and employment through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property. The sectors listed by UNESCO (2006) include “printing, editorial and multimedia production, audiovisual, photography and cinematography as well as handcrafts and design”. The so called Cultural Industries, which would define themselves as: “the joint activities of production commercialization and communication of messages and cultural goods on a grand scale that favor the mass distribution, national and international, of information, entertainment and the growing access of the majority”, come into play is in terms of the production and distribution of the symbolic goods(García Canclini, 2003).
While the beliefs have narrative structures that appear to belong to this type of mythological discourse, there is another element that comes into play concerning their disemmination and it is the vehical of this message. The communication of a belief has evolved with humanity , what began to spread through spoken word today can be found in current mass-media or other methods of communication and reach a wider audience than in past decades or centuries. This also influences the narrative content, which penetrates other cultures continually changing in order to revitalize itself in its new context. In the past narratives were communicated over great distances and today they have an even further reach. In the case of the 2012 Mayan prophecy, the end of a baktun not only means understanding it as a “end”, or a “change” from current Western perspective, but also that it is mixing with other modern beliefs, from religions like New Age to planetary destruction through climate change.
As part of these social contexts that are forming, and that they are in turn performances of the uses of certain media in order to spread a belief, call special attention to the Mayan phenomenon because it is part of the new religous forms that are developing today and in large part to the new forms of communication and the expansion or transnationalization of new technologies.
In 5 large Cultural Industries many of the categories as well as the agents mentioned by Defesch and Stiller can be found:
Literature: There is a large quantity of books, whose principal focus is the following: document investigation, personal development and science fiction. Call attention to the fact that these books have an average of 200 pages. Also that, for example, in Mexico that some of the most important bookstores they are catalogued in “Non-Fiction” and “Self-Help” sections. In 2009, Hoopes calculated more than 500 title published on this topic.
The main publishing companies found:
It is worth mentioning that Random House Mondadori is a large transnational publishing company, in Spain it own the following publishers: Areté, Caballo de Troya, Collins, Debate, DeBolsillo, Electa, Grijalbo, Grijalbo Ilustrados, Lumen, Lumen Infantil, Mondadori, Montena, Plaza & Janés, Rosa dels Vents, Sudamericana. It also has various publications on this topic.
There is also an interest in the case of the London publisher Thames and Hudson which mainly publish books about architecture and have published Michael D. Coe’s The Maya (1966) and Breaking the Maya Code. London. A book that references the topic.
Movies: The movie that explicitly talks about the phenomenon is 2012, which was released in 2009 and directed by Rloan Emmerich, the production house was Columbia Pictures. This movie earned more that $769,679,473 USD worldwide and had the fifth biggest box office 2009. The mass-marketing around the movie harmed its credibility due to the fact that tickets were raffled for a Life Lottery (like in the movie). It was a massive vehical for spreading the prophecy on a global level. There are other more commercial movies that refer to a cataclysm and are suspected to be in a similar vein as 2012, for example Melancholy. Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol to be released in 2012 by Columbia Pictures also makes this prediction.
However there are more elaborate movies available for smaller audiences that are more familiar with the prophecy. For example 2012: Time for Change, released in 2010 and directed by João Amorim, is a full-lenght documentary based in part on the book by Daniel Pinchbeck, where they present the way to transform out unsustainable society into a regenerative planetary culture. This can be attained through a change in personal and global consciousness and the systematic application ecological design. David Lynch, Sting, Ellen Page, Gilberto Gil, Barbara Marx Hubbard, and Paul Stamets make appearances in the film. These videos frequently circulate in youtube or the internet.
Video: There are four aspects of videos where refernces to the 2012 prophecy can be found. First there are those that “make the jump” to television after being commercialized in DVD format. In this case we have everything produced on The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, National Geographic, etc. The second aspect are the videos that are created in order to sell merchandise at events, in stores or websites specializing in alternative thinking, where the majority of the clientel already are familiar with the theme. For example Believing is Creating: The Message of the Galatic Maya written by Santiago Pando (2010) o 2012: The Truth of the Mayan Prophecies, a documentary by Silke Grasreiner (Mexico 2007/2008), Mayan Revelations of 2012 and Beyond: A Planetary Event, Raúl Juliá Levy (in production). Thirdly there are the music videos where Mayan or Millenarianist motives are reintroduced. I mention the more well known cases, such as the explicit ones like Britney Spears’s Till The World Ends (2011), or the implicit solely with estetic references to the Maya like Jennifer Lopez’s I’m into you (2011) or Camila’s De mi (2011). This last group Mexican group recorded its video in several places in the Mayan Riviera among them the Mayan ruins of Cobá where Doctor Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Accords whose theme deals with Toltec knowledge, participated in the film. The fourth variation of the videos are those generated by the users of the internet, some of whom sympathize with the Mayan 2012 phenomenon. They labor on videographic material where they expound their ideas, with images and directed videos or silent films and later “upload them to the internet”.
Cable Television: As public television treats the subject of the 2012 prophecy like news there is a bigger repurcussion on cable television channels. On public television we can find news about some discovery, conferences on the theme, interviews dealing with some the events of some well known shamans or special programs about the phenomenon in the form of special reports. On cable televisoion the principle producers (and disseminators) off content concerning the 2012 phenomenon are:
The History Channel alone has produced no less than 3 documentaries (and more on the way) entirely devoted to sensationally ‘exploring’ apocalyptic visions of 2012: “The Lost Book of Nostradamus”, which culminates in a prediction by 2012 theorists Jay Weidner and Vincent Bridges that this “lost book” actually predicts cataclysm in 2012 (Witheside, 2009). Others are: Mayan Prophecies: Unmasking the Past by Kreg Lauterbach, 2006. Mayan Prophecy of Judgement Day (2006), The Last Days on Earth (2006), Judgement Day 2012: The End of Days (2007), Seven Signs of the Apocalypse (2009) and Nostradamus 2012 (2009).
Discovery Channel has produced: The Mayan Code, Apocalypse 2012 (2009), and the series The Mayan Apocolypse by Graham Townsley which was composed of three parts (2011) it should be mentioned that the academics Hoopes and Sitler participated.
National Geographic Channel in its documentary series Prophecies: Latin American Predictions fimled 2012 Mayan Prophecie (2011)
Canal Infinito The Prophecies of Nostradamus 2012 (2009), The 7 Mayan Prophecies (Fernando Malkún, 2008).
Witheside (2011) mencions thatthe extremely popular sci-fi television series The X-Files concluded the series by revealing the final secret, the plot the whole series had been culminating toward, that the final alien invasion was to take place on December 22, 2012 (McKenna’s date), even mentioning the Mayan calendarand agreeing with Defesche about the importance of the 2012 phenomenon reaching a much wider audiennce than whatthe relatively obscure esoteric books could ever accomplish on their own (Witheside, 2011).
It seems interesting to me that the documentaries released in 2011 broke with the scheme in that they were presenting more apocolypse and fatalism than in the preceeding years.
Tourism: UNESCO (2006) was one of the organisms that had put more emphasis on its tourism programs as a Cultural Industry and the possibility to utilize it as an central element in developement strategies for the Latin American and Caribbean countries. In the case of the 2012 phenomenon the more attractive regions for receiving tourists is the Mayan Route which is composed of Guatemala, Belice, Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras. It should be mentioned that this route was formed with the other countries before Mexico entered into the dynamic of this tourist corredor. Nonetheless Mexico became part of the route in June 2011. Pay attention to the use of the language on the part of the media officials for the promotion of international tourism to the zone and including not only for the marketing, but to official communicators:
Communication 21/06/2011 from the Secretary of Tourism (SECTUR)
“(…) The Secretary of Tourism, Gloria Guevara Manzo, explained that the tourist program that was put in place by President Felipe Calderón will stimulate our country’s cultural tourism. It is estimated that en the remainder of the year and during 2012, more than 52 million turists will visit this region, which will generate an income of more than 270 billion pesos from these tourism activities. It is noted that December 21, 2012 is a significant date of the Mayan Calendar,on this day the 1,877,000 day cycle, which began in 3,114 B.C., will end bringing with it the beginning of a new era. Because of this, the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán will develope a series of actions in order to promote our country’s tourist activity.
But the 2012 phenomenon has also reached other places such as the Juan Fernández archipelago, in Chile, which they say is the Island of the Apocalypse. The principal place, outside of the Mayan Route, is Bugarach, a villa situated in the south of France on the Spanish border, where it already has a history of sightings, movements of religious sects, Celts, New Agers, etc. and now some swear it is the place in order to survive the 2012 phenomenon. This rumor has catapulted in the number of visitors and the value of the land currently for sale, however it has begun to harm “the peaceful village” and arousing the suspiscions of the French police. Speaking of real estate sales, there has also been a strong real estate development referring to the buying-selling and construction of bunkers, mainly in the U.S. and Europe.
Internet: In the case of the Internet there is a constant and rapid growth of productions pertaining to the phenomenon of 2012. Dario Valencia Restrepo commented that if you do a Google search for “Mayan prophecies” it will generate more than 300,000 results (2010). As of March 15, 2012 there were 591,000 results, the differeence is an almost 100 percent increase. http://www.google.com/insights/Notice how the searches related to this theme are growing. Pay attention to the “spikes” in activity in specific dates, for example the two days after the tsunami in Japan. In the release put out by the Interministerial Mission for Monitoring and Combatting Cultic Deviances from France (MIVILUDES, 2011 ) it signaled that last year 2.5 million webpages were registered that referred to the end of the world in December 2012.
There are many types of pages, from those that merely divulge information, to those that pretend to sell everything that is necessary for the future apocalypse. This passing through forums and videos. It is interesting how in this medium the others can converge: extracts or entire books of literature about the phenomenon, television programs, videos or movies in some type of platform like Youtube can be found. There are also pages that hope to promote tourism including those where you can buy packets on the same site. It is also in cyberspace where they make skeptics into believers. We find pages of the transnational channels that not only make DVDs, but have pages specifically about the topic, but there are also offline institutions there being represented or attacking these narratives. Two examples of government sites from the governments of the Maya Route, for example: http://www.mundomaya.travel/ , http://www.visitguatemala.com/es/2012-guatemala , http://copan2012honduras.com/ and the NASA page “2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End? ” where the FAQ section has 135,934 views, one of the most visited on the page.
This is a panorama of what the Cultural Industries generate in respect to the 2012 phenomenon. It has been observed that the 2012 meme is gaining ever more spreading power due to Emmerich’s and other films, an ever-increasing book publication rate, a vast number of websites, more and more popular media coverage, including several mentions and interviews on Fox News and articles in the New York Times, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone (among many others). (Witheside, 2009). As noted in the publication of the MIVILUDES 2011 (Efe, 2011): “the prolification of new technologiees has given to date an amplified resonance, at the moment the economic crisis and natural catastrophies give the people a supplementary reason to believe in the end of the world”. This generate a demand as an even more diverse variety of alternative media sources continue to develop and 2012 seems to get its foot in the door of each of them. One example would be the 2012 iPhone applications like Ultimate 2012, which you can buy from Apple for 99 cents. As this phenomenon becomes more and more popular it seems also more and more important to have available a critical view of it as it becomes increasingly embedded in people’s worldviews (Witheside, 2009).
Heterogeneous Consistency.
When faced with these mixtures of beliefs, we should ask ourselves “What makes these different elements consistent?” Eco points to the following logic: “given that it is demonstrated that we cannot change the world, everything that takes shape to establish existence from another reality will be well received (and that much worse on behalf of that bourgeois demand and scientific coherence: we will join with radically distinct things)” (Eco, 1998). In a context where the death of the grand stories, of the great integrated ideologies of the social structure of our century, has provocated the return of the religions, official and heretic, before everyone fulfilled the need to recover the sentiment of the collective adventure. This is when the great world view collapsed, man, a religious animal, counts on the alternatives: (aristocratically) adopting a philosophical position, adhereing to an official religion; or affiliating himself with a religious sect. For Eco the New Age is not a repressive type of sect, less demanding than a religion, more entertaining than a philosophy. The New Age: the absolute fusion that approved whatever position without majority rational or theological coherence. Everything is accepted, from frisbees to macrobiotics, from Buddism to Pranatherapy; enough with cooking a typical menu, “A do-it-yourself religion” (Sauret). It is not a coincidence that the academics that study this phenomenon , including MIVILUDES signal that the boom of the 2012 phenomenon is closely related to the New Age.
Alejandro Frigerio analyzing the expansion of the afrobrazilan religions in Argentina, studies the new ideas’s use of presentation mechanisms that facilitate the individual and social reception of new religions, without this means of unavoidablely large modifications in the doctrine and the practices are not adaptation strategies, but ways of presenting the new ideas. Because of this it takes the idea of frame alignment (alignment of interpretive frameworks of reality). With this Frigerio found that when links are established between belief systems and/or values present in society and the system of beliefs of the new religions(Frigerio, 1999). The question of why and how people begin to dedicate time and energy to a movement, despite being one of the central themes for the subsistence of the social movement, has not traditionally received the attention that it deserves. Through studying the continous process of organization and negotiation of the world view or ideology of a movement and of its adherents or converts, one should pay attention Figierio’s methodology concerning frame alignment which is achieved though small works of interactive and communicative social mobilization. (Frigerio, 1999, pg 6).. Frame alignment would help: ” to establish a connection between the interpretive orientations of the individuals and those of the groups that aspire to recruit them, in the form of some interests, values and beliefs of the individuals which are seen as congruent and complementary with the activites, objectives and ideology of the group”.(Frigerio, 1999, pg. 7). The 2012 phenomenon is where matrixes of distinct feelings meet, these matrixes interact below the cognitive link of New Age and mediation of the Cultural Industries, in such a way that “interpretive frameworks were expanded”. I found elements, in the conducted interviews and in the forum that I investigated, that reveal how the subjects do not have mistrust in using some concepts that appear to be contrary or reveal themselves to be different from what they express to believe, however they appear in a spoken manner in their discourse:
“Greetings to all of the forum users, I present myself in this forum because of its elevated content and scientific rigor. We find ourselves in the home stretch and little by little all of the loose ends are being tied off and we are at the climax where everything converges and we will see what happens with all of the theories or scientific and prophetic hypothesizes (...) However, for me the end of 2012 will break from all of the most notorius events, they will be clear indices and indicators of something that is being prepared…” (Kapax, 2012).
“I am looking for energy, the people understand energy in an esoteric manner, but energy is not a esoteric question it is a question of electromagnetism, there is an electromagnetic field around the earth, but we also have an electromagnetic field in each one of us. These types of places independently of what the archeologists say, are centers of power, practically like magnets, of cosmic energy. I am not speaking of a esoteric cosmic energy, I am talking about energy” (Álvarez, 2012)
(on the 2012 phenomenon) “...Speaking of the archeological information I can say that from my perspective, it is more of a calendar term. The others will speak after me, and I have a lot of respect for their ideology, they have faith in their beliefs and you have to respect that. This is a free country. Well it is scientifically proved that in the archeological zones of Mexico and in many places where there are archeological zones the energy is stronger on the days of the equinox and the solstice, this is certain.” (De la Cruz, 2012)
“K.- Yes, speaking of the 2012 prophecies I am familiar with the 2012 prophecies as well, the planets will align and it is when you are going to see these small problems...have you seen a top when it spins? Like that, you are going to see how the planet is going to spin and there are going be small phenomenons that my family has told of from generation to generation when I have my children, I am going to tell it to them another day. 2012 will end, but it will not be the end of the world, it will start the cycle from 0, instead of the calendar that we have today it will not end, here on the Mayan calendar if it had an end (...) my cousin knows about the prophecies too (he goes for him, another adolecent)
W.- Many say that in 2012 there will also supposedly be UFO encounters, we disagree and believe that good changes are coming in 2012(...) they are the tropical storms, cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis these are what we are mainly seeing, but in this is the planets aligning, but supposedly it is not only the planets that are aligning, (...) yo only have to consider the 360 days of the year that are the 365 days of the year because the solar system has a relation with the pyramid, taht is based on the 90 steps, 90 multiplied by 4 gives you 360 plus the 5 at the base are 365 days of the year(...)
ME - And you believe that already happened?
W- The countdown yes, yes it has begun because this year the 365 days will end and it will begin another 365 days that has to align itself in order to arrive to mark the changing of an era.
ME - And what of the UFOs?
W.- It is mythology. It could be true. It could be science fiction.
ME- And who told you or did you investigate it?
W.- Well as you are recording us, the gave us homework and I investigated it on the internet and found pictures.
K.-. I did as well “ (Interview with Kenay and Wiliam, 2012)
One of the mechanisms that contributes to the sensation that the end of the world could be possible are the grand mediums of communication and their flawed strategies of “informing” and to produce a minimum understanding of the 2012 phenomenon, or simply to try to “entertain”. One should note what an employ of the Carnival Elation, of the Carnival Cruises Line, expressed when his ship took a group of foreigners to Chichén Itzá:
“For us its a regular visit, in fact the company has an excursion that is called 2012 Prophecies, together with Mérida city government. We play them a video with references to certain things related to the 2012 prophecies and later we take them to a archaeological zone that is called Kinich Kak Moo” (Operator, 2012)
The media is not outside of the social dimension and in regards to this millenianarist euphoria it contributes an intersubjectivity that is increasing day by day, especially in the products of the Cultural Industries: books, television programs, Internet sites, movies, emails and press amongst others. (Reguillo, 2010) This is where there is a divergance of messages that tied themselves to the construct of the Mayan culture like an enigmatic civilization and in the end the Long Count of one of their calendars in order to continue structuring narratives where they fit with another series of intregal elementes: energy, Biblical dates, scientific terms.
What calls attention to this phenomenon is the irruption of logic where it has been demonstrated a kind of accelerated learning in which they have been known to use new technological resources in order to scatter their spores of fear or intentions of change: the message that the Mayans (supposedly) left. But what it implicates apart from an analysis like in the title, or with the circular narratives that they make, including the images of an ecology, morally and economically deteriorated world in order to be capable of impacting the sensibility of the users in the messages of esthetics that synthesize the capacity of colonization of the imagination through the pliers of a visceral fear. (Reguillo, 2010).
“You saw that we have been having massive earthquakes, have you heard about the solar flares? Well there is a whole series of things happening right now, people do not want to think about it, but it is 2012 or 2012 is already happening (...) the Mayan’s were not saying that the world was going to end, the thing that is going to end is us (...) I know that this sounds like that movie 2012, but you must begin to think that we are we are going to do what we are capable of doing to survive all of this” (Álvarez, 2012)
“Good Afternoon!!!! I wanted to greet everyone... The truth is seeing all of the forum’s themes I feel a little less lonely!!! I am really afraid of what could happen =( Greetings from Pergamino, Argentina.” (flor_pergamino, 2012)
“Hello. I am Antonio and I just saw Jesse Ventura’s program about the 2012 conspiracy and I am terrified. I suspected many things, but now they have been confirmed. I hope that through this forum we can inform everyone about what we can what is coming and we can save ourselves. Thank you so much.” (Sierra, 2011)
“Hi, I’m new, I’m Argentinian, and I found this forum while I was looking for information about what was going to happen in 2012 according to the different things that are ciruclating on the internet, and the truth is I wanted to know how to prepare myself and my family. Thanks.” ( Mario333, 2012)
MIVILUDES indicates in its annual report that when confronted with this phenomenon, those in power must “be more vigilent” against “extreme acts” that the citizens, driven by these millenarianists discourse, can commit (Efe, 2011). What is that, that when confronted with this phenomenon, gives France this perspective in contrast to the countries of the Mayan Route that have a different view torwards it? Maybe it is because France is the cradle of the Enlightenment and rationalism like the organizer of day to day life, in contrast, the other countries are accustomed to coexisting with distinct world views like the indigenous and they subscribe to the phenomenon within another context that appears less fatalistic and from which they could also enjoy economic gain. The interpretive framework is distinct, so much seems that for France these types of interests, values and beliefs concerning these subjects are seen as incongruent and contrary to the national ideology and obejctives. On the other hand, for the other countries there is no conflict of interests, values or beliefs, in contrast they include themselves in the activities, objectives and group ideology and it is thus perceived as congruent and complimentary.
Conclusion
The myths about the possible end of the world have been around for thousands of years and each time they feed on new fears, for example nuclear extermination or Y2K, with the computer software, in the year 2000. In its 2011 report Interministerial Mission for Monitoring and Combating Cultic Deviances pointed to December 12, 2012, the date that the Mayan calendar ends, as the 183rd time that the end of the world has been anounced since the fall of the Roman empire (Efe, 2011). They say that many processes have accelerated because of the adoption of new technology, it would also appear that the millenarian cycle has been cut short. The postmodern condition made possible the use of this technology and these narratives.
Cultural Industries are important in the promotion and the mantaining of cultural and economic diversit and they supposedly help to create democratic access to culture. Nonetheless there is great inequality when it comes to the access of the written and personal portrail of the actual Mayans in these products.
The actors that use the Cultural Industries in order to disemminate the phenomenon of the Mayan prophecy generate contained hybrids, on these diverse beliefs present themselves without guarding a closed structure. This makes spirituality present itself with scientism, at the same time mixing itself with conspiracy theories, including extraterrestrials. At the same time is binds itself to facts, this generates a better degree of insertiion than one that would be contained merely in the discourse of the 2012 phenomenon; this lends itself to the immediacy in the cases of the Internet, live T.V. programs and recent phenomenons with extraordinary explanaitions.
If the idea of the final, beginning and ending of cycles is not sufficient into to provide a kind of architypical support, the anchor and reference other myths and prophecies of other cultures create a cognitive link towards other geographies. Within this phenomenon a series of beliefs can be found that range from comprehensive world views like the supposed Mayan prophecy of the end of the world, New Age beliefs, the Ecological movement, “scientific” discourses refering to solar explosions, planetary alignments, etc.; which converge and transform themselves into a hybrid narrative where New Age beliefs appear to be the intergral element for the discourse around the end of the Long Count of the Mayan Calendar.
A wager is that they are translocalized and expanded because it is a plastic and hybrid belief, that this 2012 phenomenon is mounted to the logic of postmodernism, that the conditions that made the possible use of the Cultural Industries in the presence of a modern project that did not save the promise of common good or progress. The narratives and levels of subjective signification take the products of the Cultural Industries when they can align themselves with interpretative frameworks, overcoming any differences. The Cultural Industries take advantage of the similarities of distinct belief systems in order to achieve globalization.
