Source text - English Translation is very difficult. This is because a language is a unique way of looking at the world. People often assume that if you can say something in one language, then you will be able to say exactly the same thing in another. This is not the case, because different languages are structured differently. There is often no “exact equivalent”. A language is a product of a country’s historical experience, its culture, its mindset, its beliefs.
Translation - French Traduire est très difficile. Ceci est dû au fait qu’une langue est une façon unique de considérer le monde. Les gens partent souvent du principe que si l’on peut dire une chose dans une langue, on peut automatiquement dire exactement la même chose dans une autre. Ce n’est pas le cas parceque différentes langues sont structurées différement. Souvent il n’y a pas d’équivalent exacte’. Une langue est le produit de l’expérience historique d’un pays, de sa culture, de sa façon de penser, de ses croyances.

Source text - English Welcome to Le Pic Vert
Le Pic Vert is a large, detached house situated in Serignac, a small, quiet village set in pretty rolling countryside about six kilometres from the market town of Beaumont de Lomagne and approximately one hour north-west of Toulouse in Tarn et Garonne in south-west France.
The house, which was built in 1860 and originally had an ‘epicerie’ on the ground floor, is situated next to the church and faces at the front on to the main street of the village and at the rear onto a garden with trees beyond. There is another small garden between the house and the adjoining property.
The original front door on the main street is no longer in use and the main entrance is now from the rear through a covered terrace entered from a door facing the side of the church.
The house has been completely and sympathetically renovated and can sleep up to 11 people and a baby. The rooms are large with high ceilings making it very cool and comfortable in the summer. The house is fully furnished and the furnishings and decoration are simple and modern in character.
The House
On the ground floor there is a large covered terrace at the rear of the house opening on to the main garden which is partly paved and receives the sun in summer from morning until late afternoon. The main entrance door leads from the terrace to a small hallway with the dining room/kitchen on the left and a sitting room straight ahead. The sitting room (which has a double sofa-bed) opens onto the small side garden that is partly paved and receives the sun in the afternoon. On the right hand side of the hallway as you enter is a staircase that leads up to the first floor with a utility room/shower/WC behind the staircase. On the first floor there are three double bedrooms (two with queen-size beds and one with two single beds) and a large bathroom with a bath, bidet and WC. One bedroom has direct access to the bathroom. There is also a large double-height sitting room at the rear of the house overlooking the garden and the countryside beyond with a small kitchen under a staircase that leads to the second floor. On the second floor there is a gallery leading to the fourth bedroom and a mezzanine, both overlooking the first floor sitting room. The mezzanine has a day bed and the fourth bedroom has a queen-size bed, an en-suite shower/WC and a walk-in wardrobe. See floor plans of the house.
Equipment
There are televisions in both sitting rooms: the one on the first floor can receive most UK free-to-air TV and radio stations and the one on the ground floor can at present only receive French stations. There is a DVD player and a video player in the ground floor sitting room and a video player in the first floor sitting room. There is also a CD player in the dining room, a CD and cassette player in the ground floor sitting room and a CD player in the first floor sitting room. There are large selections of books, videos and DVDs in the house. There is also a cot for a baby. There is a refrigerator and a range cooker with two ovens in the kitchen. In the utility room under the stairs there are a freezer, a washing machine and a storage cupboard. There is a wide selection of plates, cutlery, pots and pans, tea pots, coffee makers, blenders, glasses, etc in the low-level cupboards in and around the kitchen and dining room.
The Village
Serignac is a small, quiet village that sits on top of a hill overlooking the valley of the Gimone, a tributary of the Garonne, about six kilometres from the market town of Beaumont de Lomagne. On a clear day the Pyrenees are visible to the south. The village which now has a population of about 500 people, was once fortified but the walls collapsed in the late 16th century and all that remains of the fortifications are the arches at either end of the village, one under the church and the other under the mairie. The medieval character of the village remains however and can be seen in its narrow streets and half-timbered (colombage) houses. The village is set among pretty rolling countryside which is intensively farmed producing garlic, onions, sunflowers, melons, maize, wheat and of course wine.
Translation - French Bienvenus au Pic Vert
Le Pic Vert est une maison individuelle de bonne taille qui se trouve à Sérignac, un petit village calme situé dans une campagne vallonée à six kilomètres de Beaumont de Lomagne, approximativement à une heure au Nord Ouest de Toulouse (Tarn & Garonne).
La maison a été construite en 1860 et était à l’origine une épicerie. Elle se situe à côté de l’église et donne sur la rue principale du village, derrière, il y a un jardin et plus loin des arbres. Un autre petit jardin sépare la maison de la propriété d’à côté.
La porte d’origine et qui donnait sur la rue principale, a été bannie et l’entrée est maintenant à l’arrière de la maison par une porte qui fait face au côté de l’église. On atteint la maison par la terrasse.
La maison a été complétement rénovée en respectant son style d’origine. On peut y dormir à 11 plus un bébé. Les pièces y sont spacieuses et les plafonds hauts ce qui la rend bien fraîche et confortable l’été. Elle est entièrement meublée et la décoration y est de caractère simple et moderne à la fois.
La Maison
Au rez de chaussée
A l’arrière de la maison se situe une grande terrasse couverte donnant sur le jardin principal qui est en partie pavé et donne plein sud. Ce jardin est donc au soleil du matin jusqu’en fin d’après-midi. En entrant dans la maison de la terrasse on se trouve dans un petit hall d’entrée avec à gauche, la salle à manger/cuisine, en face le living room et à droite un escalier qui mène au premier étage. Derrière la cage d’escalier se trouve un débarras avec WC et douche. Le living room possède un canapé-lit et donne sur le petit jardin de côté qui est lui aussi en partie pavé et est ensoleillé tout l’après-midi.
Au premier
A l’étage se trouvent 3 chambres doubles (2 à grands lits et 1 avec 2 lits simples) et une grande salle de bain avec baignoire, bidet et WC. Une des chambres a accès direct à la salle de bain. Aussi au premier, un grand salon qui donne sur l’arrière de la maison et donc le jardin et la campagne environnante. En dessous de la cage d’escalier qui mène au deuxième étage, il y a un petit coin cuisine.
Au deuxième
Là, se trouve une galerie menant à la 4ème chambre et à une mézanine, tous les deux avec une vue plongeante sur le salon d’en dessous. La mézanine a une banquette-lit et la 4ème chambre a un grand lit, une douche/WC et une penderie. Consultez les plans de la maison.
Equipment
Il y a une télé dans le living room et le salon; celle du premier étage peut capter la plupart des chaînes télé et radios anglaises et celle au rez de chaussée les chaînes françaises. Au rez de chaussée, il y a des lecteurs DVD et video ainsi qu’un lecteur CD et cassette. Un autre lecteur CD est au 1er. Il y a une bonne sélection de livres, videos et DVD et également un lit de bébé. Dans la cuisine, il y a un réfrigérateur et une double gazinière à 2 fours. Dans le débaras il y a un freezer, une machine à laver et un placard. Dans la cuisine / salle à manger il y a une bonne selection d’ustensiles de cuisine, assiettes, couverts, casseroles et marmites, théières, cafetières, verres etc…
Le Village
Serignac est un petit village tranquille en haut d’une colline qui donne sur la vallée de la Gimone, tributaire de la Garonne, à peu près à six kilomètres de Beaumont de Lomagne. Par temps clair on peut voir les Pyrénées au sud. Le village qui a maintenant une population d’à peu près 500 habitants, avait autrefois des fortifications mais les murs se sont écroulés à la fin du 16ème siècle et tout ce qu’il reste sont des arches à chaque bout du village, sous l’église et sous la mairie. Le village garde néanmoins un caractère médieval avec ses rues étroites et maisons à colombages. Le village se situe dans une campagne vallonée où on trouve des cultures intensives d’ail, d’oignons, de tournesols, de melons, de maïs, de blé et bien sûr de vignes.

Source text - English As soon as you step into the Burgundy region, you want to relax and adopt the rhythm of its famous snails . All you want to do is to wander about wine cellars or other atmospheric places of interests or roam around towns and villages. Burgundy is renown for its “Chateaux” nestled deep in vineyards or its rows of sandstones houses appearing to grow in bunches along the Saône river .
Between the towns of Tournus and Beaune , you can go across vineyards and take the ‘Grands Crus’ route which sings the praise of the region’s best vineyards and wines . You have: Santenay, a quaint small spa town , the villages of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet where hillsides are covered as far as the eye can see with the most sumptuous coat of various unique vines , Meursault whose medieval church steeple seems to keep a watch over ‘la Côte des Blancs’ the local hillsides, Pommard, a village wedged in the foothill of vineyards, offers beautiful old houses in Romanesque style and more ‘chateaux’…
Between Beaune and Dijon, all there is, is wine, ‘caves’ and viticulture. Do stay in small regional hotels . The owner usually has a relative who owns a vineyard and a fine cellar. He will, no doubt , get you to visit his old stone arched ‘cave’ to share a glass of wine, sat on a barrel, ‘le verre de l'amitié’ . These are memorable moments, when you talk about wine harvests or reminisce about the best years and remember country folk stories.
On the hillsides overlooking the Saône valley, are a string of opulent and quaint market towns all with names of famous ‘grands crus’ . There is Aloxe-Corton whose name and reputation seem to go back as far as Emperor Othon, then you have: Nuits-St-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin ... You can wander up the Saône and experience its morose mood . Burgundy with its rivers and canals invites us in to travel…
Translation - French Dès qu'on pénètre en Bourgogne, on veut s'y prélasser et adopter le rythme de ses escargots, si célèbres dans la région. Tout ce qu’on veut faire est se promener de villes en villages, visiter les caves ou autres endroits avec de l’atmosphère. La Bourgogne est renommée pour ses châteaux nichés au coeur des vignobles, ses maisons de pierres blondes qui paraissent pousser en grappe le long de la Saône.

Entre Beaune et Dijon, il n'y a que vin, caves et viticulture. Adoptez les petits hôtels de la région. Le propriétaire a toujours un parent qui a un vignoble et une bonne cave. Il vous fera sans doute visiter sa vieille cave à voûtes de pierres et vous invitera à partager le verre de l'amitié, assis sur un tonneau. Voici bien les meilleurs moments, ceux passés à parler vendanges, à se souvenir des meilleurs crus et d’anecdotes du pays.
Sur les côteaux qui dominent la vallée de la Saône, se trouvent des bourgs opulents et coquets aux noms de grands crus: Aloxe-Corton dont le nom et la réputation semblent remonter à l'empereur Othon, Nuits-St-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin ... On peut continuer à remonter la Saône et en apprécier l’atmosphère quelque peu morose. La Bourgogne avec ses rivières et canaux nous invite au voyage ...

I have completed the ITI, 'Setting Up as a Freelance Translator' training in 2014 which was excellent and to further build up my portfolio. I then did some work for Translators Without Borders.
In 2015, I moved back to France which was quite challenging after 31 years in UK! A year later, I am settled and work part time as a trainer for Berlitz in Toulouse. I am now keen to pick up translating again.
