As in give up entirely? No Feb 2

I have passed pension age, even the new pension age that is being introduced gradually as the population gets older and are capable of working longer. I could not live on what I earn from translation and language jobs these days, as I could have done just a few years ago.

I have passed pension age, even the new pension age that is being introduced gradually as the population gets older and are capable of working longer. I could not live on what I earn from translation and language jobs these days, as I could have done just a few years ago.

However, as long as I can earn more than the expenses for online dictionaries, insurance and whatever, and as long as I feel confident that I can deliver professional quality, I will take any work that is fairly paid.

I write and tell some of the bottom feeders that I will not accept their rates, simply because I do not actually need the work, but would happily do it if they paid. I do need some income besides my pension to be able to travel, see my family and give presents, support my favourite good causes and enjoy an outing now and then.

Yes, from translation Feb 2

I still have the dregs of my once-flourishing business but I am getting to the point where they are getting in the way of other work rather than being something I supplement with other work, so I am contemplating jacking in translation altogether so I can take full-time work elsewhere, and bugger the loss of earnings, my sanity is more important.

N/A Feb 2

I was a staff translator working for an EU Institution until 2006 when I retired and secured a comfortable pension. I started freelancing because my brain needs work and I enjoy what I do. Work has been rather scarce these days with some unexpected highs and I’ll keep on serving my customers and welcoming any work that comes my way provided it’s fairly paid.

Definitely not. Once a translator, always a translator.

I retired several years ago and have better things to do with my remaining years than work for a living.

Proz poll logic: All members must be Methuselah Feb 2

Do you honestly think all your members are Methuselahs in disguise, ready to retire in 2026?
Many of us are just surviving, working hard, paying bills, and juggling deadlines.
We don’t have a guaranteed retirement age or a pension plan right now.
But sure, let’s pretend we’re all retirement-ready and life’s perfectly sorted!

Will you be forced to retire from translation in 2026? Feb 2

That is the much more relevant question: Will you be forced into a career change because of AI? Will you have to walk away from a passion you've pursued for 20 years? For me, the answer is increasingly—and sadly—yes.
