Source text - English Initiated in 2010, Hivos’ Sumba Iconic Island (SII) project aims not only to provide access to electricity to the 650,000 inhabitants of Sumba Island in Indonesia, but also to reduce reliance on expensive and environmentally harmful fuels such as diesel and kerosene.
Although regulations, distribution of authority and geological conditions are some of the challenges facing the project, it continues to make impressive progress thanks to commitments from existing stakeholders and new partners alike, as well as the involvement of individuals and communities. For example, with support from partners such as EKOenergy, 37 MW of alternative renewable energy are now ready to be harvested, positioning Sumba as a development model for all of Indonesia.
The collaboration with EKOenergy, who donated EUR 28,000 to finance Photovoltaic (PV) solar installations, has made electricity available since mid-April 2016 to the teachers and some 270 students at Kataka elementary and junior high schools in isolated East Sumba district. They are finally able to use electronic equipment such as computers, laptops and audiovisual devices to support their teaching and learning activities. In addition, students can recharge their solar lamps at the E-Kiosk at school to help them study at night.

Source text - Indonesian Penambangan pasir laut yang dilakukan oleh kapal Queen of the Netherlands milik PT Royal Boskalis di perairan Sangkarrang, Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan terus mendapat penolakan dari masyarakat nelayan.
Sabtu (4/7/2020), ratusan nelayan menggunakan perahu ketinting atau cadik mengadang kapal Boskalis yang sedang beroperasi di tengah laut. Aksi pengadangan ini tak hanya dilakukan oleh nelayan, namun juga mengikutkan keluarga mereka.
Aksi protes tak berakhir di hari itu. Kamis (9/7/2020/) mereka kembali melakukan aksi di Kantor Lurah Kodingareng menuntut pihak kelurahan mendukung aksi mereka. Warga kecewa karena dalam beberapa aksi sebelumnya tak pernah mendapat dukungan dari pemerintah kelurahan setempat.
“Kami berjuang keras menolak tambang pasir laut yang menghancurkan kehidupan perempuan dan nelayan Pulau Kodingareng, sementara pak Lurah dan stafnya tak pernah ikut mendukung, makanya kita tuntut dukungan,” ungkap Annisa, salah seorang warga.
Ruslan Jufri, Lurah Kodingareng, merespons aksi itu dengan menyatakan dukungan dan akan turut berjuang bersama warga.
“Saya turut menolak tambang pasir laut. Saya tidak setuju PT. Boskalis mengeruk pasir di wilayah tangkap nelayan. Kita akan berjuang bersama untuk menghentikan tambang pasir laut ini,” katanya di hadapan warga.

On Saturday (7/4/2020), hundreds of fishermen on their ketinting or outrigger boats blocked the Boskalis ship that was operating in the middle of the sea. This move was not only carried out by the fishermen, but also involved their families.
The protests did not end that day. On Thursday (7/9/2020), they returned to take action at the Kodingareng sub-district Head Office, demanding that the sub-district government support their action. The residents were disappointed because they had never received support from the sub-district government for a number of previous actions.
“We are fighting hard to reject the sea sand mining that destroys the lives of women and fishermen in Kodingareng Island, but the head of the sub-district and his staff have never given support, so we demand support,” said Annisa, one of the residents.
Ruslan Jufri, the Head of Kodingareng subdistrict, responded to the action by expressing his support and saying that he will fight together with the residents.
“I also reject the sea sand mining. I do not agree with PT Boskalis dredging sand in fishing areas. We will fight together to stop this sea sand mining,” he said before the residents.
