Postoje dvije verzije softballa: SLOW PITCH i FAST PITCH. Fast pitch je uobičajeniji, te se u Hrvatskoj ta verzija jedino i igra. U Hrvatskoj softball su do 2001. igrale samo žene. Od 2001. godine u Hrvatskoj se igra i službeno prvenstvo u muškom fast-pitch softballu.
