English term

Collector (Indian context)

English to French Other Human Resources
In a tribal song from Gujarat, INDIA , the name of a government officer. Anybody knows the French equivalent

Hoi for the new Collector, Hoi

He visits us like he is a god
Who wants to be a man
He smokes our bidis,
Drinks our chai
ANd then promises all that he can

Hoi for the new Collector, Hoi

He tells his half-wit chamchas
To write down what he said
On land and food and doctors
And to mark the file in red.

Dans un texte sur l'administration en Inde (site web indique ci-dessous), on trouve "The district collector, a member of the Indian Administrative Service, is the preeminent official in the district (see The Civil Service, this ch.). During the colonial period, the collector was responsible for collecting revenue and maintaining law and order."
