Note(s) : Comme application d'arrière-guichet fait référence à une catégorie de logiciel, plutôt qu'à un logiciel en particulier, il arrive que l'on trouve le terme au pluriel (applications d'arrière-guichet). Il en va de même de son équivalent anglais (back-office applications).
Le terme application d'arrière-guichet est employé par opposition à application de guichet (front-office application), ce dernier terme désignant un logiciel d'application conçu pour des transactions commerciales qui impliquent un contact direct avec le client (ex. : logiciel de caisse enregistreuse, logiciel de terminal d'agence) ou pour une utilisation par le client lui-même (ex. : logiciel de terminal de banque).
On trouve souvent, dans la documentation publiée en France, l'emprunt back-office (ex. : logiciel de back-office, solution de back-office, application de back-office, progiciel de back-office, outil de back-office).
Il ne faut pas confondre back-office et back-end.
