Yes. Most D>E dictionaries miss this, but see the German Duden: Name, den jmd. aufgrund seiner Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Familie (1a) trägt u. den er in der Regel bei der Geburt od. anlässlich einer Heirat bekommen hat; Nachname; Zuname.

Is that because of context? My dictionary gives surname and family name as being equivalent.

Careful here: if what you are calling 'surname' is 'Familienname', in this case it means 'married name'.

An Fragesteller: Geburtsname und Familienname are not the same; former remains for life, Familienname may change with marriage. Thus here IMO: present Familienname = Geburtsname.
