German term

Ausbuttern

German to English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng Spraying liquids
This is from the operating instructions for a machine designed to spray a "dampening solution" onto items passing through an industrial process.

There is not a great deal of context for "Ausbuttern", just this one appearance in a list:
----
Prüfen Sie die Flüssigkeit, die versprüht werden soll,
ob sie den physikalischen Bedingungen genügt,
hinsichtlich
- Viskosität
- Temperatur
- Ausflocken
- ** Ausbuttern **
- Scherfestigkeit
- Verträglichkeit
in Verbindung mit den Materialien der Rotorenfeuchtung.
----

TIA for your ideas.

spread/coverage/wetting

Unusual term, but I think it refers to the wetting power of the fluid (Benetzung)

BTW I'd use "wetting solution" rather than dampening here

Depending on the liquid, it could also refer to "de-emulsification" if it is an oil/water emulsion
Note from asker:
Thanks for the fast answer! Re "dampening solution" - the customer calls there machine a "rotor dampening system", so unless the term it's completely meaningless, I think I'm stuck with "dampening" really.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jonathan MacKerron : Wenske suggests "churn" for "buttern"; or coat/coating?
