The systems have exceeded their useful life - i.e., though they can be maintained operational, their maintenance costs make this uneconomic.

agree Frank Meyer : You could also say "end of their life cycle". I worked in the software industry for 9 years, and software life cycles were discussed often.

Totally correct. I also have worked for some 17 years in software-related work within the aerospace business, and "life cycle" was indeed a common term. Thank you.
