German term

abgestuftes Leistungsfach

German to English Other Education / Pedagogy
This is on an Abiturprüfung transcript.
Prüfungsfächer:
erstes Leistungsfach Französisch
zweites Leistungsfach Biologie
abgestuftes Leistungsfach Geschichte
viertes Leistungsfach Bildende Kunst

I know Leistungsfach is "main subject", "major subject", A-Level, depending on the audience, but I am stumped by the use of abgestuft in this instance.

I would appreciate any insights.

TIA

Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful contributions. As is often the case, I am sad that I cannot give some points to everyone in the grading process. It has been a real collaborative effort and a very interesting discussion.

I usually translate Leistungsfach as Advanced Level subject, und Grundfach as Basic Level Subject.
According to the above definition, "abgestuft" would be an advanced level subject, limited to basic content.
Maybe "advanced level subject, basic rank" would work?

Peer comment(s):

agree Deborah Shannon : Useful reference! Sounds similar to the weaker A-S level subjects over here, that are dropped rather than taking the full A-level. Maybe something with 'shortened course' would get the idea across?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you so much Johanna for helping me think this through and for the excellent reference. I am thinking along the lines of using "subsidiary" or "minor" for my particular audience(with an explanatory note attached}. I think Deborah's suggestion would work very well for the UK and I know that I would use pass level or ordinary level, if I were translating this for an Irish audience. Sometimes , there is more than just one right answer."
