Von den Laven wurde die *alterierte* Kruste mit einem Hammer oder einer Quetsche entfernt and danach die Handstücke mit einem Backenbrecher klein gemacht.

Bernhard Sulzer Jul 2, 2008:
here is the functioning link for the science direct article quoted above:

Bernhard Sulzer Jul 2, 2008:
@Steffen: I am not an expert and wasn't quite convinced by the meaning "verändert" in this context.
Bernhard Sulzer Jul 2, 2008:
@Steffen: I am not disputing that. :)
Steffen Walter Jul 2, 2008:
Yes, Bernhard, but the ultimate meaning of "alteriert" is still "verändert".
Bernhard Sulzer Jul 2, 2008:
"...Es stellt sich die Frage, ob diese Objekte auf natürliche Weise verwittert (alteriert) sind, oder ob sie anthropogen bearbeitet wurden...": http://www.ewu-culture.de/
Bernhard Sulzer Jul 2, 2008:
"...more altered and thus characterised by reduced internal friction" :

Bernhard Sulzer Jul 2, 2008:
"altered lava" is indeed used in English. It does seem to mean that the material/lava has changed (sich verändert) - but seems to go into the direction of "weathered" (verwittert) http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/yvo/images/20010520-122_caption.ht...
njbeckett (asker) Jul 2, 2008:
Yes, I think you are right, Steffen.
Steffen Walter Jul 2, 2008:
On a related note (but I think you knew that already), "alteriert" has nothing to do with "Alter" or "Alterung".
Steffen Walter Jul 2, 2008:
"Dated" seems highly unlikely.
njbeckett (asker) Jul 2, 2008:
Have come to the conclusion from subsequent text that it means "dated".

"Altered" is correct as far as I know.

Peer comment(s):

agree Bernhard Sulzer : regarding Andrea's comment: that would be "physically or chemically altered" - that's not used here, the term is simply alteriert/altered. // I am merely saying "altered" might be a more specific geological term.

True but this alteration ultimately occurs as a result of physical and chemical processes.
agree Andrea Winzer : "alteriert = physikalisch oder chemisch verändert"
