It's an 'English' expression but as many other scientific/mathematical concepts, it may have been 'imported' from German-speaking countries.

Since it cannot be a "beam of rays" it seems exactly that.

Since pencil means "Büschel", it is also possible. It might be a good idea to ask a native speaking mathematician or physicist which of the two is more commonly used.
For some reason, my instinct tells me it would be "bundle" but if I was the one translating it, I'd try to get confirmation...
