German term

Angriffsjäger

German to English Other Military / Defense
This is actually a software text and there is just this one example of military use. Obviously, it was a mistake to steer clear of the boys who used to play war games at school ;-) According to my web research, an Angriffsjäger is an interceptor. Can anyone confirm or offer an alternative? We're talking about air forces, by the way.
Thank you

Discussion

tectranslate ITS GmbH Aug 9, 2004:
Can we get more context, please? A list of all (or at least several) aircraft types in your text would help to find a matching term. The term could describe an "attack plane" such as the F/A 18 Hornet or "fighter bomber" F/B 111. Or A 10 Thunderbolt II...
Non-ProZ.com Aug 8, 2004:
Oops, I think I'd better clear up the confusion! This translation has NOTHING TO DO WITH GAMING!! I just meant that if I had taken an interest in my fellow pupils' lunch-time activities, the right word might be familiar to me. But somehow I didn't foresee this situation when I was a teenager!

German term (edited): Angriffsjger
Selected

attacker, offensive fighter

interceptor = Abfangjäger
intercept = abfangen, Weg abschneiden

Angreifer = aggressor, attacker
Angriffslust = aggression
Angriffsspieler = attacking player
Angriffswaffe = offensive weapon

agree Derek Gill Franßen : When you put it like that it actually makes more sense - I like "attacker".

Thank you

Gut, dann genügt eigentlich "fighter" (Ich denke da an Starfighter)

German term (edited): Angriffsjger

intruder

At least that's what they call them at this war games site.

Intruder
The Intruder is mostly used on planets to attack your Enemy and also protect your Stations.
If possible, he can only hyper jump a short distance and therefore is only used for short range missions like exploration or protect your air sovereignty.

Peer comment(s):

disagree David Moore (X) : But, Kim, this is an aircraft - not a spaceship

German term (edited): Angriffsjger

interceptor

Your "interceptor" makes sense, seeing as how the "Angriffsjäger" is an offensive ship that "hunts" its prey... :-)

Attack fighter

Similar to Johannes' answer, but I think this precise form is correct for present-day military aircraft.

Interceptor was more commonly used during the Second World War, so that might be better is that is the period in which the game is set.

Kim's answer could be right if the game is set centuries into the future - who knows what they will call them then (maybe by that time everyone will be speaking Klingon!)
