Deutsch term

Mittelstandsküche

Deutsch > Englisch Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie, Ethik usw. German History
From a post WWII memoir relating the history of a Bavarian community:

Gegen Ende des Jahres 1924 wird ein Mittelstandsküche eingrichtet.

This is a time when there was a recovery from dire financial strife - the preceding sentence mentions how money is again flowing into the community's coffers, and the following one has to do with the community providing simple gravestones in the cemetery, where none had been erected due to the relatives' lack of funds.

Discussion

Elisabeth Moser Aug 22, 2010:
I would not translate this term but rather explain it (within the sentence or within parentheses or in a footnote depending on the text's purpose/audience).

Info

I am not sure if this could be of any help, but this is what I found ....

I became acquainted with Mrs. Luba Wolf from Krakow who was working in the “Mittelstandskueche” (Mittelstandskuche - middle class kitchen (possibly soup kitchen) [German]), it was a kitchen which provided food for refugees. I rented an apartment and started to work as a seamstress.
