social theory
I'm translating a book of social theory. No need to parse the context in detail, the point is the metaphorical use of Rumpfform, which is used here to mean the generally shared portion of a theory even if some of its aspects are discarded. I'm considering skeletal form but am not sure. Or maybe there's no way to save the bodily metaphor and I just have to use portion?

rudimental form
Rudimental (in the sense of fundamental or basic) form seems to fit the context better than either skeletal or rump form.

"Rudimental" also saves the body metaphor. One (fairly ancient) example:

rump form
The literal translation seems to me to work perfectly well here. And Google provides examples of the use of the term, e.g.
https://books.google.co.uk/books?isbn=1571052666
John Carey, William V. Dunlap, Robert John Pritchard - 2006 - Law
With the overthrow of the Taliban administration and the restoration of the Northern Alliance, even in a rump form, to some form of authority in the country...

Adam R. Seipp - 2013 - History
It was a truce that survived military defeat and a change of government in 1916 and one that would survive, albeit in rump form, the end of the war.

: This sounds a bit odd to me.

nevertheless, "remnant" is one of the meaning of "rump" and it seems to me to be what the author is intending

It all comes down to how you translate the rest.

: with "basic content" ... or even "shared content"

hi Harald, actually the 'rump' bit could be left out. See discussion box. What do you think?

core concept
just an idea
23 hrs
framework
Linguee translates "Rumpfform" as fuselage or hull, so "framework" might work here.
