Auction of telecom frequencies a great success
Deutsche Telekom/ABN-Amro/Rabobank and Telfort (BT/NS) were the highest bidders for two national DCS/GSM licences for mobile telecommunications in the Netherlands. The companies have paid 600 million and 545 million guilders respectively for the right to use the frequencies auctioned by the government in The Hague at the end of February. They will each be allowed to use 15 MHz DCS 1800 and 5 MHz GSM frequencies.
BT/NS will introduce a national network for mobile telephony within three years. The introduction of these new companies in addition to the existing PTT Telecom and Libertel is expected to generate greater competition in the market for mobile telephony and a fall in consumer prices.

... 16 smaller DCS 1800 frequency packages were auctioned at the same time. KPN acquired seven of the smaller packages, Libertel two, Tele Denmark four, Orange/Veba two and Telfort one. On average each package raised 45 million guilders. The frequencies can be used for varying purposes, such as wireless local loop and regional telephony, but when linked up can also generate a national network. It is the first time that radio frequencies have been auctioned in the Netherlands. The Minster of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, who decided on the auction, will also be bringing frequencies for commercial radio under the hammer in 1999/2000. The auction mechanism may also be extended to other fields.

The Dutch government will launch the first application procedure later this year for a national and regional frequency block for digital audio broadcasting (DAB). This technology will allow the use of a single frequency for broadcasting various radio programmes. At the same time new data services can be provided on the same frequency, such as wireless Internet applications.
