agree William [Bill] Gray : If you opt for "hogwash" you get masses more hits on google, so this seems to be a more common expression. I still like the word "humbug" however, especially as it directly aligns with the Norwegian original.

agree William [Bill] Gray : I would opt for "pure humbug" simply because it comes more easily to me as a native speaker (collocation, as we call it). It also provides a couple of hundred more hits on google, for what that's worth!

Seriously - humbug and hogwash are excellent choices. I've just had a soft spot for balderdash for aeons.

agree Christine Andersen : Me too - I had a wonderful English teacher who used it on surprising, but very apt occasions! (like attribtuing unlikely ulterior motives and 'messages from the author' to 'plain good story' type literature. I could never see the real messages!
