Swedish term

madonnaskåp

Swedish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting church art
Appears in a description of Sorunda church in Södermanland on a tourist website I'm translating:

I kyrkan finns också ett madonnaskåp av Herman Rodes verkstad i Lübeck, troligen från 1480-talet.

Discussion

A niche is a deepening e.g. in a wall. Did you consider that Rode was a painter who surely did not produce any niches in his workshop? But just do what you want...

madonna niche

Considering Sweden was Catholic at the time, I would prefer madonna niche. Catholic churches are filled with niches for saints. Shrine, on the other hand, is very broad, and often includes entire churches or outdoor places of worship
