français term

l’échange

français vers anglais Art / Littérature Poésie et littérature Narration in of philosophical style scipt
This is a narration for a short video/movie. I have been told it is in an abstract style, but I find it to be more philosophical than abstract. I have considered using "interdependence" "interrelation" "reciprocity" here because "exchange" does not sound right in English. But would any of these words be too far removed from the source term? Is there something better?

The context reads:

"Pour être tout à fait honnête, j’aimerais que l’on ait une relation juste, d’égal à égal, sinon elle ne durera pas. Tout ce qui possède en soi une inégalité finit toujours pas s’effondrer. Je veux que l’échange soit plus bénéfique."

Discussion

Lara Barnett (asker) Apr 24, 2014:
@ Alison I am just using "we". This is a philosophical text about humanity's climb to happiness/freedom etc only to be beaten down by authority. However, the first two lines, and a couple of references towards the end, bring in another person who is obviously in a relationship of some sort with the writer (who is a woman). This question of yesterday may help:

"on" What does "on" refer to here?
James Perry Apr 24, 2014:
I am assuming that this is about relationships between 2 people. If this is the case, I would tend to translate this as "interpersonal exchange" or something like that. The French turn-of-phrase can often be quite decorative but the meaning is, purely and simply, that the writer wants exchanges (verbal, behaviours) to be more favourable, based on equality...

a suggestion...

I agree with you that 'exchange' doesn't really work here, and presumably you will already have used 'relationship', otherwise I'd suggest that as another possibility

sometimes 'dialogue' can also work, but I think that wouldn't apply in this case
