since it refers to a forestry company, it's done to increase the value of the lumber (fewer/smaller knots), but of course, there's also a trade-off (it's a labor-intensive process that must be done right or the trees actually get worse)
Has nothing to do with surgery; that's when trees are diseased and something is cut out/off
I am also a professional gardener, if that helps.
