German term

auf-/abtrommeln

German to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
I need urgent help with these terms that came out of left field in an operating manual for a hydraulic power system controlling winches for the sails of a ship.

Ziehen der Tasten bedeutet auftrommeln bzw. Leine holen und Drücken bedeutet abtrommeln bzw. fieren.

Thanks!

Thanks Johannes: Fieren/veer was the only one I could figure out myself ;-). Am I right about "Leine holen" (see my next question) Thanks

Come to think of it, I would probably replace "reel out" with "pay out", for nautical use.
Peer comment(s):

agree Darin Fitzpatrick : Also like "pay out."

agree Rebecca Garber : reel in (haul in) / reel out (let out, pay out)

reel up / reel down

Seitltrommel = rope barrel, rope reel
(Ernst, WB der industriellen Technik)

Fieren heißt übrigens to veer, to slacken a cable
