Source text - Russian Этот внушительный четырехмоторный гигант, который сегодня более известен как АНТ-44, является самой совершенной и мощной советской летающей лодкой довоенных лет. История появления задания на его проектирование не стандартна и еще в период формирования тактико-технических требований описывалась в сопроводительных документах. В них, в частности, говорилось, что во второй половине 1934 г. известная английская фирма «Шорт» предложила спроектировать и построить для Советского Союза крупную 4-х моторную летающую лодку. В Центральном аэрогидродинамическом институте (ЦАГИ) посчитали такой вариант решения вопроса неприемлемым, поэтому незамедлительно последовало обращение в Управление ВВС Красной Армии с заявлением, что такой самолет можно построить и у нас. Произошло это через несколько месяцев после катастрофы летающей лодки АНТ-27 (МДР-4), поэтому стоит оценить смелость и настойчивость конструкторского коллектива, возглавляемого А.Н.Туполевым. Такое уверенное поведение в отстаивании собственных интересов по достоинству оценили и в руководстве авиапромышленности, предложение отечественных инженеров было принято и проектирование летающей лодки началось в конце 1934 года.
С мая 1920 г. по май 1935 г. морская авиация находилась в ведении Главного Управления РККВФ Республики (с 28 марта 1924 г. Управление ВВС).
В мае 1935 г. морская авиация передана в подчинение Начальника Морских Сил РККА (наморси).
В августе 1937 г. Отдел морской авиации (авиационный отдел) вновь перешел в ведение ВВС РККА, где находился до января 1938 г.
В январе 1938 г. в связи с созданием Народного комиссариата ВМФ было сформировано Управление морской авиации (УМА) ВМФ.
С 7 сентября 1939 г. - Управление авиации ВМФ.
В марте 1941 г. Управление авиации ВМФ переименовано в Управление ВВС ВМФ.
Эскизный проект АНТ-44, который определили как морской тяжелый бомбардировщик МТБ-2, разрабатывался в течение года, причем в середине 1935-го этот процесс был приостановлен в ожидании возвращения Туполева из поездки в США. Очевидно, руководитель конструкторского отдела ЦАГИ вернулся из-за океана с новыми знаниями и впечатлениями, так как осенью проект летающей лодки значительно переработали. В перечень изменений, внесенных до декабря 1935 г, скорее всего вошло использование нового аэродинамического профиля NACA серии 230, которым именно в этот период заменили ранее используемый профиль АНТ-6 в скоростном бомбардировщике СБ. Интересно, что в случае с СБ профиль получил обозначение ЦАГИ-40, а для МТБ-2 использовали обозначение - №156-40.
Впрочем, рабочее проектирование и практическое изготовление четырехмоторного морского бомбардировщика далее приостановилось вплоть до августа 1936 г. Связано данное обстоятельство было с необходимостью постройки и сдачи на испытания модернизированной летающей лодки МДР-4 4М-34ФРН. В варианте морского тяжелого бомбардировщика МТБ-1 этот гидроплан доводился вплоть до 1937 года.
Затягивание сроков помогло более тщательному и взвешенному определению внешнего облика нового самолета, его назначения и основных летных характеристик. Тактико-технические требования к МТБ-2 с четырьмя двигателями Гном Рон «Мистраль Мажор» К-14 подготовили в феврале 1935 г. В сопроводительной документации указывалось, что самолет принят к постройке ЦАГИ постановлением СТО № К-1950 от 27 декабря 1934 г.
В подготовленных в Управлении ВВС ТТТ указывалось, что МТБ-2 предназначается для ведения боевых действий на всех морских театрах СССР и должен выполнять следующие задачи:
- Бомбардировка баз и боевых судов противника;
- Дальняя дневная и ночная разведка в открытом море и на побережье противника;
- Транспортировка людей, боеприпасов, горючего и смазочного в съемных баках;
В отношении методов использования говорилось:
- Самолет может временно базироваться и работать с необорудованных гидродромов, находясь в течение этого времени на плаву без подъема на берег, и используя для обслуживания оборудование, возимое на борту;
- Самолет должен совершать полеты вне зависимости от метеорологических условий - как днем, так и ночью, в строю и одиночным порядком. Выполнение слепого полета является основным видом применения самолета;
- Самолет ведет воздушный бой, основанный на использовании собственной огневой мощи вооружения;
- Мореходные качества самолета должны позволять посадку в открытом море и максимально возможную непотопляемость при аварийных случаях, связанных с повреждением днища лодки;
- Высота боевого применения 4000 метров;
Основные требуемые летные и боевые характеристики:
- Максимальная скорость 300 км/ч на высоте 4000 метров;
- Посадочная скорость 90-100 км/ч;
- Практический потолок 7000-7500 м;
- Дальность полета с одной тонной бомб 1300-1350 км;
- Максимальная дальность полета (без бомб) 1600-1800 км;
- Экипаж самолета 6 человек, пилоты размещены в кабине в шахматном порядке;
- С нормальным полетным весом самолет должен маневрировать на воде, осуществлять взлет и посадку в открытом море при волне высотой 1-1,5 метра и ветре 7-10 м/с;
Translation - English This imposing four-engine giant, which today is better known as the ANT-44, is the most complete and the most powerful Soviet flying boat of the pre-war years. The story of the emergence of the requirement for its design is non-standard, and still in the period of consolidation of the tactical-technical requirements, is described in accompanying documents. In these, in particular, it was revealed that in the second half of 1934 the well-known Short Brothers Company proposed they design and build a four-engined flying boat for the Soviet Union. At the Central Aero and Hydrodynamics Institute (TsAGI) this variant of the solution to the question was considered to be unacceptable. Therefore without any further delay there followed an appeal to the Directorate of the Red Army Air Force (VVS) with a statement that such an aircraft could be built in the Soviet Union. This happened a few months after the catastrophe with the ANT-27 (MDR-4) flying boat, so it is worth noting the bravery and persistence of the design collective, led by A.N. Tupolev. Such confident behaviour in the settlement of fundamental interests was appreciated for its true value among the leadership of the aviation industry, the proposal of the native engineers was accepted and design of the flying boat began at the end of 1934.
From May 1920 to May 1935 maritime aviation was under the jurisdiction of the Chief Directorate of the Republican RKKVF (Workers and Peasants Red Air Fleet) (from 28th March 1924 the Directorate of the Air Force).
In May 1935 maritime aviation was transferred to a subordinate of the
Head of the Workers and Peasants Red Army (RKKA) Maritime Forces. In August 1937 the Department for maritime aviation (aviation department) was transferred again under the jurisdiction of the VVS RKKA, where it stayed until January 1938.
In January 1938, in connection with the creation of a People’s commissariat of the Navy, a Directorate of maritime aviation (UMA) of the Navy was formed.
From the 7th September 1939 – The Directorate of Naval aviation
In March 1941 the Directorate of Naval aviation was re-named the Directorate of the Naval Air Force.
A preliminary design for the ANT-44, which was defined as the MTB-2 maritime heavy bomber was developed over the course of a year, and in the middle of 1935 this process was brought to a halt to await the return of Tupolev from a trip to the USA. Evidently the leader of the TsAGI design department returned from overseas with new knowledge and new impressions, in as much as the project was considerably re-worked in the autumn. Into the list of changes, brought in up until December 1935, most likely came the use of a new NACA series 230 aerodynamic profile, during this very period it replaced the ANT-6 profile, which had been used previously on the SB high speed bomber. It should be noted that in the case of the SB the profile was given the TsAGI-40 designation, but for the MTB-2 the No156-4 designation was used.
Incidentally, the engineering design and manufacturing of the four-engined maritime bomber was further halted until August 1936. The given circumstance was linked to the necessity to build and hand over for testing a modernized MDR-4 4M-34FRN flying boat. This hydroplane was being refined in the MTB-1 heavy maritime bomber variant until 1937.
The protracted deadlines contributed to a more careful and weighted definition of the external appearance for the new aircraft, it’s purpose and specific flight characteristics. The tactical-technical requirements for the MTB-2 with four Gnome-Rhone ‘Mistral-Major’ K-14 engines were prepared in February 1935. In the accompanying documents it was indicated that the aircraft was accepted for manufacturing at TsAGI by STO decree No K-1950 of 27th December 1934.
In the tactical-technical requirements prepared by the VVS it was indicated that the MTB-2 is intended to conduct combat activity in all the maritime theaters of the USSR and should carry out the following tasks:
- Bombing of the enemy’s bases and warships
- Long range day and night reconnaissance of the open sea and the enemy’s shoreline
- Transportation of people, ammunition, fuel and lubricating oil in detachable tanks
With regard to the methods of use, it stated
- The aircraft could temporarily be based at and work from unequipped hydrodromes, and be afloat during this time, without bringing to shore, and use equipment which was taken on board for its servicing.
- The aircraft should carry out flights independent of meteorological conditions, day and night, alone and in a group. The execution of instrument flying is a fundamental application of the aircraft.
- The aircraft will carry out air combat, on the basis of using it’s own weapons.
- The seaworthiness qualities of the aircraft should allow landing on the open sea, and the maximum possible unsinkability in emergency situations linked to damage to the bottom of the craft.
- The altitude for combat use: 4,000 m.
The primary flight and combat characteristics required are:
- Maximum speed: 300 km/h at an altitude of 4,000 m
- Landing speed: 90 - 100 km/h
- Service ceiling: 7,000 – 7,500 m
- Range with a one-tonne bomb load: 1,300 – 1,350 km
- Maximum range (without bombs): 1,600 – 1,800 km
- Flight crew: six people, pilots are seated in the flight deck in a staggered arrangement.
At a normal flying weight the aircraft should manoeuvre on the water, and carry out take off and landing on the open sea at a wave height of 1–1.5 m and a wind speed of 7 - 10 m/sec.
