Source text - English Problem: students don’t participate in classroom activities. Apparently, there are no disciplinary problems as it’s specified that they’re polite and respectful.
This problem can be dealt with in multiple directions, but it’s important to understand the reason why these university students don’t participate.
Some of these reasons may include:
- They major in a totally different discipline and the English class is not one of their priorities (low motivation).
- The class is too big and the instruction is mostly T-centered (class-grouping).
- The students are used to other teaching methods that might not imply oral communication in class (students’ background).
- The students can be simply bored because the material in not interesting (lesson content).
- Students are afraid of making mistakes in front of their peers (class atmosphere).
- Other
If these are some of the causes of the problem, we have to accept that some of them can’t be eliminated. For example, if the class is too big, it’s impossible to change the number of the participants, unless the administration interferes and divides the class. Or if the mandatory book is boring, it can’t be ignored by the teacher, unless, again, the administration doesn’t change the policy.
However, it’s possible to work on other possible causes of Mr. Li’s problem.
Firstly, much can be changed thanks to creating a good class atmosphere. In case the students are used to other instruction methods or are afraid of publicly making mistakes, establishing a positive and mistake-welcoming atmosphere can help those who have these problems (and not other).
Secondly, through effective grouping a big class can be divided productively every lesson. This would help us solve the problem of the T-centered instruction and give the opportunity (or force) to talk at least a little almost every student. Group activities can also serve as a remedy against the stress that students may feel having to speak and potentially make mistakes in public.

Если выше перечисленные факторы действительно имеют место среди причин возникновения проблемы, мы должны признать, что некоторые из них не могут быть устранены. Например, если группа слишком большая, количество студентов в ней невозможно изменить без вмешательства администрации. Или если обязательный учебник скучный, преподаватель все равно не может его не использовать, опять же, если администрация не изменит свою политику.
Однако можно попытаться что-то изменить применительно к другим возможным причинам проблемы г-на Ли.
Во-первых, многое может быть изменено благодаря созданию положительной атмосферы в классе. В случае, если студенты привыкли к другим методикам преподавания или боятся сделать ошибку в присутствии своих однокурсников, создание доброжелательной и положительно воспринимающей ошибки атмосферы может помочь решить эти проблемы (но не другие).
Во-вторых, путем эффективного деления на группы можно добиться большей продуктивности на каждом уроке. Это поможет нам решить проблему центральной роли учителя в классе и дать возможность попрактиковаться в говорении хотя бы немного каждому студенту (или подтолкнуть их к практике). Деление на группы может помочь и в том случае, когда студенты избегают говорить перед целым классом, боясь сделать ошибку на виду у всех.

C’è una donna che è stata rappresentata molte volte dagli artisti della prima metà del novecento non solo con dipinti, ma anche attraverso la fotografia e la scultura, una donna che è stata fonte d’ispirazione per alcuni personaggi letterari: è Luisa Casati. Una donna affascinante, eccentrica e stravagante, amante dell’arte e che fu capace di trasformare se stessa in un capolavoro e in una leggenda vivente. Ebbe il coraggio di rifiutare gli stereotipi dell’aristocrazia europea, per costruirsi un personaggio fatto di ville faraoniche, spiritismo, animali esotici, libertà sessuale.
Alla “Divina Marchesa”, come la definì Gabriele d’Annunzio, Palazzo Fortuny a Venezia dedica la prima mostra (4/10/2014 - 8/3/2015), che conduce alla scoperta di una donna incredibilmente moderna che ha influenzato la cultura, in grado di ispirare ancor oggi l’alta moda.
E’ impossibile non aver ancora incontrato Luisa Casati. La troviamo nei dipinti di Carrà, nei ritratti di Giacomo Balla e di Giovanni Boldini, nelle sculture di Boccioni, nelle fotografie surreali di Man Ray, nei diari di guerra di Marinetti, nelle memorie di Depero. Fu una musa per i futuristi e le avanguardie, ispirò personaggi letterari come Isabella Inghirami, personaggio del romanzo di D’Annunzio “Forse che sì forse che no”. Praticamente tutti quelli che l’hanno conosciuta, non hanno potuto sottrarsi al suo fascino e chi ha potuto le ha dedicato un piccolo capolavoro. Chi ha visita la mostra a lei dedicata, rimane stregato dalla personalità che affiora in ogni oggetto. Tutto parla di lei!
