Source text - English Hi, this is Ashish Shankar and I'm very excited to speak to the youth at the TEDx forums. What I'm going to talk about today will be very important during your lifetime and career and you will also measure a lot of your success through this variable. You guessed it, I'm going to talk about money today. More importantly, how do you achieve financial freedom fast in your lifetime and career. Now, to achieve financial freedom, first of all, you need to understand how compounding works. And I call it the magic of compounding, because as time goes by, compounding becomes more powerful and more exponential. Let me start by giving you an example. I'm sure all of you in your school must have done basic mathematics and you would have come across the rule of 72. Now, often enough, we don't pay too much attention to the rule of 72, but I can tell you it will become extremely important during your lifetime. Now, what is the rule of 72? Rule of 72 is very simple. If you want to know how much time your money is going to take to double, you apply the rule of 72. To give you an example. If your money is compounding at 9% and you divide 72 by 9, it gives you 8. So which means your money will double double in eight years, if you're compounding your money at 9%. Similarly, if you end up getting a 15% return on your investment by the rule of 72, you will double your money in 5 years, all right? Now, you can use this rule of 72 across time horizons to understand what is the rate you need to double your money or conversely, how much time a particular rate will take to double your money, right? And all compounding is about doubling. So I'll illustrate with a simple example. When my son turned ten years old, I put in ten lakhs [one million] in his account and I basically invested in an equity fund for him. I truly believe that in India, equities will compound at 12 to 15% in the next 20 to 30 years, because that's the kind of number we've seen over the last 40 years. And the country is getting more exciting over time. Now, if these 10 lakhs compound at 15% for the next 50 years, I mean, he's ten today, he'll be 60 in another 50 years and that's when he will need the retirement corpus. It will be more than suffice for his retirement. And you may wonder how, because 10 lakhs is a paltry amount. And how will 10 lakhs suffice for his retirement? Well, at 15%, 10 lakhs gives you a neat 100 crores [1 billion] after 50 years. The amount seems really magical, I know that. But that's what the magic of compounding does to your money. So try to understand compounding. Try and understand the rule of 72. Before you go about understanding how much money you need to achieve financial freedom. Now there is another magical tool which I'm going to talk to you about. This tool is called SIP. Now, most mutual funds are financial products, have this concept of regular savings, and SIP is exactly that. SIP is Systematic Investment Plan. Now you can choose the fund of your choice, and you can choose the amount that you want to invest every month, so that that money keeps getting deducted from your bank account. And over time, you'll be surprised how hard this money runs. And again, this all can be attributed to compounding. So let me give you an example again, If you, let's say, invest 1000 rupees every month and you do it religiously for the next 20 years at 15%, you end up getting 70 lakhs [7 million], right? Now, if you invest 2000, you will end up getting 140 laks [14 million] so on and so forth. If you do 10,000, you can just multiply that amount by ten. You'll end up getting seventh growth in your account. So you can backward calculate as to how much money you need by the rule of 72. Let's assume that inflation is compounding at 7% Then essentially the cost of living will double every ten years, right? So in 30 years, it'll go up eight times. Now you can further multiply it by two or three, because you also expect your lifestyle to improve and then you can backward calculate as to how much you need to save every month. I'm going to talk to you today about a very important concept, which is the cost of delaying your investments. Often enough, when we are young, we tell ourselves that, you know, let me enjoy with the income that I'm getting today and I will start saving as soon as I have enough money. Trust me, there is never enough money, right? And the cost of delay can be very expensive. Let me take the same example. If you invest 1000 rupees every month for 30 years at 15% you end up with 70 lakhs [7 million]. Now, if you postpone your savings by just five years, which means you invest for 25 years instead of 30, you will end up with a corpus of 25 lakhs [2.5 million], which is the half of what you would have got, had you started five years earlier. Similarly, if you further delayed by another five years, you will end up with one fourth the amount that you would have had, had you started earlier. So the cost of delay can be extremely expensive. So I would say whatever you want to save, you start today, the earlier the better, right? All of you are in your youth and this is right time to start investing your capital. The fourth point is you need to choose the right asset class to invest, right? When I say the right asset class, every percentage of return matters. And I'll give you an example again, let's assume your money is compounding at 15%, that become 70 lakhs if you put 1,000 rupees every month. Instead of 15, you end up winning 12, you'll end up with 25 lakhs instead of 12. If you end up getting nine, you'll end up with 18 lakhs, right? Can you see this? Every 3% lower return, just 3% lower return, halves the corpus that you're getting at the end of your career. Now, whilst a fixed deposit may give you a lot of peace of mind, and even if you end up getting 7 or 8% on your fixed deposit, you shave about 30% in taxation every year. And mind you, this leakage happens every year. Whether you take your money back or not, so you end up with 6, 7% compounding and essentially at 6, 7% compounding, you will end up with far less money than what you will end up at 15% And again, I give you an example. You will actually end up with maybe only 70 lakhs at 6% So the difference is ten x. So choose your asset class wisely. As I said, I do believe equities in India offer a fantastic opportunity even for the next three decades. And we've seen in the last four decades, equities basically compounded at close to 15 to 16% So if you invest wisely, I don't think that achieving final financial freedom is a difficult task at hand. So four concepts that I explain to you today, are very powerful to achieve your financial freedom. First, understand the magic of compounding. And trust me, compounding is a concept, which not just is extremely important to money matters, but it is important to every aspect of life. Every aspect of life is about compounding, it's about longevity. Many of you may have read that book, how a genius happens, right? Anybody with 10 000 hours of practice in any subject becomes a genius. Similarly, even in investing, the 10 000 hours is equal to 30 years. 30 years of compounding produces magic. I give you an example of 50 years where I've invested 10 lakhs for my son, which I believe will become 100 crores over the next 50 years. So the power of compounding extremely important to understand, the rule of 72. Second, SIP, very powerful concept SIP simply understood as systematic investment planning, right? If you invest regularly, you can end up with a very large amount per the cost of delay, right? A simple delay of five years will bring down your corpus by half. Another five years will bring down your corpus by one fourth. So please do not delay your savings habit. Start early, in fact, I would say that instead of saving what you are left with after spending, you first decide from your income how much you want to spend and after you deduct how much you want to save, after you do that, you should look at spending. So these are a few very powerful concepts. I think if you understand these concepts, you are set to achieve your financial freedom. Thank you very much. It's been a pleasure speaking to you. Source text - English I'm so busy. I'm at capacity. This week is a total write-off. Our society glorifies hustle culture, and people wear being busy like a badge of honor. But there's a difference between being busy and actually living your life. I found this out the hard way when I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2017. When people find out that I create organizational products for a living, they always assume two things. They think I'm the most organized, well-thought-out, put-together person they've ever met. And while I am good at managing my time, I fall short on something as simple as keeping my desk clean. The second thing they always assume is that I'm always on time, and they're actually wrong. I'm usually 15 minutes early, and the reason for that is because I was born in Switzerland. And if you're on time, you're already late. Ever since I can remember, I have been obsessed with planning and organizing. I used to, actually, recap my entire day in my planner as a teenager, and that is hilarious to look back on and read over, by the way. I'm extremely time-oriented, and I've built my entire life around structure, plans, schedules, to do lists, calendars, you name it. It's something that's always given me a lot of mental stability and made me feel like I'm in control of my life. What you're seeing here are actual images of my planner from 2017. And while I will admit it is very personal for me to be sharing the inside of my planner with you, I feel that it's important that I do. What's very evident on these pages is my love for planning. I'm somebody who adds everything to their planner, every single appointment. And it was one appointment, March 14 at 2:40 p.m. exactly, that would, unbeknownst to me, change my life forever. How do you plan for something that you really don't see coming? Especially for somebody that feels in control by planning. What you're seeing now is me, a different version of me. This is my MRI. So not only do you get to see the inside of my planner, you also get to see the inside of my brain. Three attacks throughout my twenties are now seen as black holes on an MRI screen. This asteroid-sized disease put multiple holes in what I thought was the perfect life. And I remember, for a while, every time I would go see my neurologist, I would be reminded that there was no cure for MS. And I would leave their office inevitably feeling like I had this looming fate that was lying ahead of me. What I'm about to tell you next might shock you, but getting that diagnosis was one of the best things that could have ever happened to me. Knowing that you're sick comes with a certain freedom, let's call it. And I've noticed that people deal with being given bad news like this in two very distinct ways. One, they use it as an excuse for absolutely everything, and no one will ever understand what they're going through. Or two, they use it as fuel to become the best version of themselves they have ever been, and the only person they have to prove it to is themselves. I eventually reached a point where I no longer wanted to feel like I was a victim of this disease, and I decided to transform my life. And to this day, it has been one of the hardest things, and I have to kick my own "you know what" almost every single day still. So how did I get here? What steps did I take to get myself out of bed and back to work? Well, I decided to "unbusy" myself. It's a term that I created to identify that I was dividing my time in my schedule into either "I'm busy" time or "I'm not busy" time. Somewhere in the last decade, we started confusing being organized with being busy. And they are, believe it or not, not the same thing, but they can feel very much like the same thing. I think we all get this daunting sense of satisfaction, telling people how busy we are, and it was actually starting to make me feel gross. I no longer have the energy or time to be feeling like I don't have enough time. We all get to have the same amount of hours and every single day. But why do some of us feel like we get to have less of it? I don't know what my life holds anymore, but what I do know is I have more power to say no to things now than ever have before. Doing things you don't actually want to do will make it feel like your time is being robbed from you. And it shouldn't take you being diagnosed with an illness to realize that that is not good for you. I say no to a dinner party, for example. Not necessarily because I have other plans, but because I've learned to value the time when I don't feel well enough or strong enough to do something. And I use that time to do something only I love, like sitting on the couch, watching The Real Housewives, drinking wine. It's called self-care, and it's okay to take time to rest. And while rest is important, it is not the only solution to unbusying yourself. I remember one of the first things I was told when I first got my diagnosis was that I would need to be making some changes in my life, particularly to my job. You know, as an entrepreneur, your job is very stressful. You have long hours, you have a lot of work, and it was just going to be absolutely too much. However, the surprising discovery that I made through my pursuit of becoming unbusy is that stress, actually, was good for me. I liked having stress. Stress gave me strength. It gave me power, and it actually gave me meaning. I think people see stress as such a negative thing, but what they don't realize is that the only reason why they're feeling stressed is because something greater is at stake, something that they really care about the outcome of. So I've decided to cultivate a mindset to embrace the stress in my life. And in changing my relationship to stress, I realized it was actually giving me the strength and focus I needed to fight this disease with everything I've got. So how do you become unbusy? Ideally, of course, without getting sick first, but that's why I'm here, so I'm going to give you a three step action plan that you can put in your planner today. The first thing I want you to do is remove the word busy from your vocabulary entirely. You don't actually need it. So the next time somebody asks you, "How are you doing?" You don't respond with "Oh my God, I'm just so busy." You're not busy. You're just unorganized. So that brings me to the second point. Take power over your time. Find a way to create a routine for yourself that allows you to have space for time with your friends, a nature walk, a glass of wine, a spontaneous trip or a bath. Because if you manage your time well enough, you might realize that you actually have a lot more of it than you thought. And third, change your relationship to stress. Stress is an indication that life is testing you and seeing if you'll survive. If you're feeling stressed, try to take that stress and maybe channel it into something positive the way that I did. And remember that stress is here to gently remind you - okay, sometimes aggressively - that you have a purpose on this planet. I like this evolved version of myself. I'm better than I was before, and ironically, I'm also healthier. I'm so much more in tune with my body and my mind. And I actively reclaimed my health by becoming a vegetarian, by seeing a therapist, by taking the right supplements, exercising and really removing all negativity from my life. Optimizing my health is an absolute non-negotiable for me. There is a difference between being busy and actually living. I challenge you to be intentional with what you fill your every day with. So stop hustling and start healing because you only get one shot.

Eu finalmente cheguei a um ponto onde eu não queria mais sentir como se eu fosse uma vítima desta doença, e decidi transformar minha vida. E até hoje tem sido uma das coisas mais difíceis, e eu tenho que chutar o meu próprio "quer saber" quase todos os dias ainda. Então, como cheguei aqui? Que passos eu dei para levantar da cama e voltar ao trabalho? Bem, eu decidi me "desocupar". É um termo que criei para identificar que eu estava dividindo meu tempo na minha agenda no tempo "estou ocupado" ou "Não estou ocupado". Em algum momento da última década, começamos a confundir sendo organizado com estar ocupado. E, acredite ou não, eles não são a mesma coisa, mas eles podem sentir muito como a mesma coisa. Eu acho que conseguimos esta assustadora sensação de satisfação, dizendo às pessoas como estamos ocupados, e na verdade estava começando a me sentir mal com isso. Eu não tenho mais energia ou tempo de me sentir como se eu não tivesse tempo suficiente. Todos nós temos a mesma quantidade de horas em todos os dias. Mas por que alguns de nós se sentem como se tivéssemos menos tempo? Eu não sei mais o que minha vida reserva, mas o que eu sei é que tenho mais poder para dizer não para as coisas, mais do que nunca. E não deveria ser preciso ser diagnosticado com uma doença pra perceber que isso não é bom para você. Eu digo não a um jantar, por exemplo. Não necessariamente porque tenho outros planos, mas porque aprendi a valorizar o tempo quando não me sinto bem ou forte o suficiente para fazer algo. E eu uso esse tempo fazer algo que só eu amo, como sentar no sofá, assistindo "The Real Housewives", bebendo vinho. Isso se chama autocuidado, e não há problema em tirar um tempo para descansar. E embora o descanso seja importante, não é a única solução para se "desocupar". Eu me lembro uma das primeiras coisas que me disseram quando recebi meu diagnóstico era que eu precisaria mudar algumas coisas na minha vida, particularmente ao meu trabalho. Source text - English I wrote this journal entry in 2013. "I've been sleeping restlessly for months. There's a constant feeling of tension in my body. I love ministry as a Catholic priest, the opportunity to share my faith with people and support them as we journey through life together. But I have a desire to share my life with another person. I knew, in discerning ministry, that celibacy, not getting married, was part of the package. But I don't know if I can do this any longer. I'm rarely alone, but I feel bitterly lonely." I wrote this when I was on the cusp of making one of the biggest and most significant decisions of my life: whether to leave ministry as a Catholic priest. I think my life has been a reasonably unique and unusual one. Now in my early forties, I've had careers as an opera singer, a Catholic priest, a corporate lawyer, and now, a management consultant. (Laughter) And when people hear the careers that I've had, the most common question I get asked -- maybe the one that's on your mind -- is, "What on earth is the connection amongst it all?" (Laughter) Through all of these changes, through all of these careers, one constant has been present: the practice of reflection. Now people may think that reflection is something that happens in a dark, private room by candlelight or flashlight, to purge one's deepest, darkest secrets. But I want to bring this practice out of the dark and into the light. I want to share how this practice can help our everyday lives, and especially our work lives. I want to share how this practice helps to improve performance, to make better decisions, both big and small, and to build better relationships. Interestingly, in a 2020 survey of some 4,000 respondents, conducted by BCG and BVA, the question was asked, "What makes a good leader? What are their main qualities and skills?" Notably, possessing a good capacity for reflection was listed as one of the top five skills, the others being empathy, listening, consideration and team development. Reflection is about learning. It's about looking at the events of our lives without judgment, but with a critical lens. I really like the way leadership professors James Bailey and Scheherazade Rehman describe it: "It requires taking an honest moment to look at what transpired, what worked, what didn't, what can be done and what can't. Reflection requires courage. It's thoughtful, and it's deliberate." So how do we do this, then? Let's take a look at sports. I grew up in Australia, and one of the most popular games played was cricket. Consistent high performance from batters, bowlers and fielders is essential. But given it's a team sport, it's not just about how ... the individual performs, but about how the team performs collectively together. Cricketers reflect during a game, after a game and over time. During a game, they might think about a missed catch or how they could bat or bowl better the next delivery. After a game, they might come together to watch video replays, to look at what worked and what didn't, which might differ from what they actually experienced during the game itself. And then, over time, they might look to the patterns of their wins and losses, to glean even more meaningful conclusions and insights. The same process can and should be used in the workplace, and I don't think we need to watch video replays of our meetings to dissect what took place. (Laughter) I don't know about you, but that might feel kind of creepy. (Laughter) Reflection can be done through a variety of different formats: purposeful thinking, written journal entries, audio notes, pitches, a discussion with a mentor or honest friend. The point is to find what works for you and to make a regular commitment. To examine the events and experiences of your lives -- what worked, what didn't, and why -- and then, to think about what and how you would like to do things differently next time. When we practice reflection as a habit, we gain even more meaningful insight, because we see patterns that reflection on stand-alone events doesn't provide. I truly think reflection can help everyone -- people in every industry, at every stage in one's career, and in every point in one's life. Let me share with you an example that I think most people can connect with. Most of us have meetings. I was due for a daily catch-up with a colleague. He had just led a client meeting for the first time. It was to give a progress update on the work stream he was responsible for in this project. He said to me that the meeting had gone terribly. He didn't get through the actions taken. He wasn't able to discuss the obstacles faced or the decisions required. He didn't get to the next steps or the responsible persons. He felt angst, uneasy, upset. He was concerned about what the client had thought of him and the meeting, but more importantly, what the client felt about the work that was going on in the work stream. It would have been so easy for him to have pushed past this, to try and suppress the emotions, but that would have missed a massive opportunity. We took a few moments to think and objectively reflect over what took place, and then to put in place some commitments as to what and how he could do things differently next time. He decided that in [the] future, he would start each meeting with an agenda alignment, to make sure there was clarity on what needed to be achieved. And then, he'd resolve to make sure that he would take greater control over the meeting so that if topics came up beyond the scope of the agenda, that he'd note that a separate discussion should be had. Reflection helps to improve performance. Reflection helps to make better decisions. Imagine, for a moment, you've been in your current role for five years. It's a creative role, but you don't quite feel you've got that zing, that energy for it, anymore. You've been offered another opportunity in the organization. It's actually a promotion. It's a more senior role, managerial. But you'll have responsibility for looking after 12 direct reports. A competitor has also recently reached out to you. They've offered you an opportunity for the same kind of role that you've got currently, but it pays a higher salary. There's a big difference between being a creative and being a manager. So what is it that really makes you happy? What is it that really makes you fulfilled? Reflection provides a treasure trove of data to help you work through this. Have your reflections mentioned being bored with projects, or do you just want to try something new? Would you like to be a manager? Would you like to see people grow and form and develop them? Do you think you could do a better job than your own manager? Reflection provides great insight. It's easy to get lost when you've got an opportunity of a fancier job title and more money. But reflection enables you to focus on what really matters, and to make better choices. Let me share with you a final example. Most of us have relationships in our work -- bosses, customers, clients, suppliers, whomever. And I think most of us try to have good relationships with these people. If I'm honest, while I strive for this ambition, I haven't always succeeded, but reflection has helped me to build better relationships. A number of years ago, I was giving a feedback session with a colleague, and after having done so, I took a few moments to jot down some thoughts as to how it went. I realized I had been too clinical. In fact, if only you could have seen the expressions on my colleague's face. (Laughter) I'd raced through their various strengths and moved onto spending more time in their areas for development. If I'd really thought about this person, I would have spent far greater time actually on their strengths, actually emphasizing why they were such a valuable member of our organization, and then, creating a space where they felt psychologically safe, to be able to go on and explore these areas for development. Reflection has helped me to improve this and to build better relationships. So this might all sound a little fine and dandy, and may be obvious or trivial, but the truth is, so many of us don't take time out for regular reflection. This practice has helped me and I am so grateful. After I left being a priest, I took some time out for reflection to think about who I was and what I wanted my life to be about. Reflection helped me to grapple with this, and it continues to help me today as I grapple with this and other topics. So as we end this day, or tomorrow, before you begin the next, sit down, take a breath, and reflect. And you'll see the power that this habit brings to your life. Thank you. (Cheers and applause)

Ele estava preocupado com o que o cliente tinha pensado sobre ele e sobre a reunião, mas mais importante o que o cliente sentiu sobre o trabalho que estava acontecendo no fluxo de trabalho. Honestamente, enquanto me esforço por esta ambição, nem sempre consegui, mas a reflexão me ajudou a construir melhores relacionamentos. Há alguns anos, Eu estava dando uma sessão de feedback com um colega, e depois de o ter feito, eu levei alguns momentos para anotar alguns pensamentos sobre como foi.
