A large square of heavy canvas fitted with lines to allow it to be drawn under the hull of a ship where it is damaged. The pressure of the seawater holds it tight against the ship and greatly reduces the inflow of water.

Ο ρίπος συγκρούσεως είναι ένα τετράγωνο κομμάτι καμβά μεγάλων διαστάσεων, εφοδιασμένο με σκοινιά που επιτρέπουν να τραβιέται κάτω από το κύτος του πλοίου, όπου αυτό έχει υποστεί βλάβη. Η πίεση του νερού της θάλασσας τον κρατάει σε επαφή με το πλοίο και μειώνει σε μεγάλο βαθμό την εισροή του νερού.
