The term benefice, according to the canon law, denotes an ecclesiastical office (but not always a cure of souls) in which the incumbent is required to perform certain duties or conditions of a spiritual kind (the "spiritualities") while being supported by the revenues attached to the office (the "temporalities").

Beneficjum (łac. beneficium – dobrodziejstwo) – dożywotnie prawo czerpania dochodów związanych z piastowaniem określonego urzędu istniejące od około X wieku w stosunkach kościelnych. W terminologii świeckiej także nadanie gruntu wasalowi przez seniora, czasowe albo dożywotnie, jako honorowe wynagrodzenie albo w zamian za służbę wasalną, później dziedziczne.

Nazwa ta oznacza także sprawowany urząd i dochody z nim związane.
