Znalazłam, co to:
A na buchcie śryk - długi nawet na 7 m zaostrzony pal, który wbija się w dno, by zatrzymać tratwę.

Tylko że na tratwach w Ameryce Pn. takiego ustrojstwa chyba nie mieli, w każdym razie nic nie piszą o tym. Tłumaczyć to jako drąg hamujący czy coś takiego?

The snubber's job was mostly to snub, or brake, the raft by dragging his pole against the bottom. (...) The snubber stuck a long, strong snub pole of about three inches in diameter between the ties down to the river bed. His was a heavy job. Bracing the pole against the ties, he had to push down against the river bed to control the raft's speed or to stop it altogether.

: W całej sieci jest tylko to jedno wystąpienie: http://tinyurl.com/crd45wx - wygląda to na jednorazowe, przypadkowe wyrażenie, bardziej opisowe (użyte nie przez zawodowego flisaka) niż środowiskowe, w dodatku z 1857 roku (a "śryk" jest aktualnie w użyciu).

Niekoniecznie jest to istotne, że 'śryk' jest w użyciu, a 'stopping pole' nie. Przecież flis jako długotrwała tradycja w Polsce cieszy się wagą i ciągłością, jakiej nie ma w anglosaskiej kulturze.
