English to Slovak: my translation
Source text - English
Gramatickým dohovorom vo väčšine európskych jazykov je, že pre skupiny s kombináciou obidvoch rodov sa mužský rod používa ako „inkluzívny“ alebo „exkluzívny“ rod, kým ženský rod je „druhoradý“ (napr.
‘The candidate shall send his CV’).
This generic use of the masculine gender is increasingly perceived as discriminating against women.
Avoiding this generic use of the masculine form is not always easy, particularly in formal texts.
The use of ‘he or she’ etc. is awkward if used repeatedly and makes sentences longer.,
This is a particular problem in heavily inflected languages where using both forms of pronoun may mean that many other words in the sentence have to be duplicated in order to agree with both genders.
Combined forms (‘s/he’, ‘him/her’) are often seen as clumsy and difficult to pronounce.
Translation - Slovak
The grammatical convention in most European languages is that for groups combining both sexes, the masculine gender is used as the ‘inclusive’ or ‘generic’ gender, whereas the feminine is ‘exclusive’ (ex.:
„Kandidát pošle svoj životopis“).
Takéto všeobecne rozšírené používanie mužského rodu sa čoraz viac vníma ako diskriminačné voči ženám.
Zamedzenie všeobecne rozšírenému používaniu tvaru v mužskom rode nie je vždy jednoduché, najmä pri formálnych textoch.
Ak sa používanie slovných spojení „on alebo ona“ atď. často opakuje, znie to zvláštne a predlžuje to vety.
Toto je problém najmä pri jazykoch so zložitým skloňovaním, v ktorých používanie obidvoch foriem zámena môže znamenať, že sa zdvojnásobí veľa ďalších slov vo vete, aby bola napísaná v obidvoch rodoch.
Kombinované slovné spojenia rodov („on/ona“, „jemu/jej“) sú často vnímané ako nevhodné
a ťažko vysloviteľné.
