Source text - English And it was in the middle of the night. A quarter moon hung in the west.
Olaf explained that Gizur’s sentries would be asleep. If the watchdogs could be lured by the bag of half-rotten fish Sven the Vengeful carried, the warriors could move about at will.
“So you can take what you want without fighting” said Jack.
Olaf’s blow sent him sprawling “What kind of honorless brute do you think I am? If I took Gizur’s wealth without engaging in a battle, I would be no better than a thief. It would show him no respect… oath-breaker though he is”.
Jack sat up, trying to clear his head. He would never understand these monsters.
“There is one more thing you must understand” came Olaf’s voice through Jack’s spinning senses. “We are about to drink the wolf’s brew”.
The boy looked up to see a warrior remove a metal pot from the fire. Steam rose around the man’s face as the air brought a bittersweet odor to Jack’s nose. The hair stood up on his neck.
The warriors squatted around the fire. As they passed the metal pot each man drank deeply.
When it got to Jack, Olaf scooped out the leaves and squashed them over Jack’s arms, legs, and face.
He poured the dregs over the boy’s tunic. The liquid was warm, but it rapidly turned cold in the sea breeze.
The odor sent a thrill along Jack’s nerves.
His heart beat heavily. He became aware of a dozen things at once: the rustle of a hare easing its way through a bush, the fussing of the waves along the shore, the smell-the smell-of dead fish, forest leaves, pine, and fire. Especially dead fish.
Jack wanted to roll in the rotten stuff.
He heard a strange noise and saw that the warriors had begun to pant. Their eyes gleamed yellow in the firelight and their tongues protruded from their mouths.
Olaf gave a low moan that made Jack’s blood run cold and excited him at the same time.
He wanted to run and run and run. His hands and feet itched with the desire.

Accadde nel cuore della notte, mentre a ovest il cielo era illuminato da un pallido quarto di luna.
Olaf spiegò che avrebbero trovato le sentinelle di Gizur addormentate e che, se Sven Il Vendicativo fosse riuscito ad adescare i cani da guardia col suo sacchetto di pesce mezzo marcio, i guerrieri avrebbero potuto muoversi a loro piacimento.
"Così non avrai bisogno di batterti per prenderti quel che vuoi", disse Jack.
Olaf lo colpì talmente forte da farlo cadere riverso a terra. "Che razza di farabutto privo di onore credi che io sia? Se mai mettessi le mani sulle ricchezze di Gizur senza averlo prima affrontato in battaglia, non sarei altro che uno sporco ladro. Jack si tirò su mettendosi a sedere e cercando di far ordine nella sua testa: non sarebbe mai riuscito a capire quei mostri.
"C'è un'altra cosa che devi capire…" disse Olaf, spezzando con la sua voce il tumulto di pensieri nella testa di Jack "... adesso berremo l'infuso del lupi".
Il ragazzo alzò lo sguardo e vide uno dei guerrieri togliere un recipiente metallico dal fuoco. Una nuvola di vapore si sollevò e avvolse il volto dell'uomo mentre un odore, dolce e amaro allo stesso tempo, raggiunse il naso di Jack. In quel momento, gli si drizzarono i peli sul collo.
I guerrieri si sedettero tutti intorno al fuoco. Presero a passarsi tra di loro il recipiente metallico, dal quale ciascuno di loro bevve avidamente.
Non appena il recipiente fu giunto in corrispondenza di Jack, Olaf ne estrasse le foglie e cominciò ad applicarle sulle braccia, le gambe e il viso del compagno.
Infine, versò i residui sulla giubba di lui. Sebbene il liquido fosse caldo, la brezza marina contribuì presto a raffreddarlo.
L'odore era così forte da provocare un brivido che percorse interamente le membra di Jack.
Il suo cuore prese a battere forte, e i suoi sensi furono investiti da un vortice di stimoli e di sensazioni. Udì il trambusto di una lepre che si faceva strada in un cespuglio, sentì le onde abbattersi e morire sulla riva, e, ancora, un forte odore. Udì a un tratto uno strano rumore, e vide che i guerrieri avevano cominciato ad ansimare. I loro occhi, davanti al fuoco, avevano ora un barlume giallognolo e le loro lingue sporgevano fuori dalla bocca.
Olaf emise un gemito greve, che fece gelare il sangue nelle vene a Jack... e nel contempo lo fece sentire vivo.
Sentiva un impulso irrefrenabile che lo spingeva a correre... Voleva correre, e basta. Le sue mani e i suoi piedi erano pervasi da quel desiderio.
