My client has sent me 17 documents (7.7MB) for translation. I'd like to run an analysis on the group. When I open Tools|Analyse, Wordfast does not show these files unless I open all 17 first. Instead, it shows me only the files from some other directory (I'm not sure how/why they appear) and whatever files are already open.

Easy Apr 26, 2006

It's easy: Choose tools, and click on the text "Select documents". Wordfast will ask: "Open one file in the disired folder". Press OK, and choose the folder you like on your hard drive.

Best regards,
Ivan

Sounds great, but option does not appear (or I'm not seeing it) Apr 26, 2006

Thanks, Ivan. That's what I had hoped to find out. But I don't see that option. Do I need to change a setting in order to view that? As I respond, I'm away from the computer that has Wordfast, but I know my version was current as of January of this year (5.1.7?), and the option to set the directory has not been visible to me in any version before this. Curious!

You can use Wordfast Office, first step is opening files,
then checking for activate action (anylyse, extract, ...)

http://www.condak.net/testing/wfo/en/01.html

The same is in Word:
first step is opening files. Next steps are in Wordfast.

Cheers,
Milan

Wordfast Office works like a charm! Apr 27, 2006

Thank you, Milan, for pointing me to Wordfast Office. It does indeed provide a simple way to run an analysis of multiple files ... quickly and easily. (I have done all that file-opening in "regular" Wordfast, but it's a tedious process and taxes memory when the files are many and large.)

I have a followup query. I'm only able to run Wordfast Office standalone, outside of Word. Is there a way to make it run within Word so that the options are available from the Wordfast toolbar o

I have a followup query. I'm only able to run Wordfast Office standalone, outside of Word. Is there a way to make it run within Word so that the options are available from the Wordfast toolbar or at least from a toolbar within Word? At the moment, I'm going to the folder where the application file is located and launching it separately.

Many thanks again for your help!

Wordfast Office is standalone application, it serves as server for local VLTM, for handling with files (documenrts, TMs, GLOs,..). His feature Extract is the same as "Extract" in Wordafst / Tools. You can extract all segments from all opened files. You get file (a)with repetition, (b)without repetion. You can save files as DOC and translate them = create one "project TM" /this term has another meaning in WFO, there is extracted TM which contain relevant TUs from your VLTM to translated text in project/. This TM is your standard new TM.

Wordfast is mainly for "segment operation" of individual translated document.
Now we can use our new TM and go through segments of each document.

Now I'm confused again .... Apr 27, 2006

Hi, Milan

I understand now that WFO is a standarlone application. I'm afraid that I don't understand the rest of the information you have provided. Do I need to follow those steps to Analyse? I've just been selecting the documents and then choosing Analyse.

BTW, I notice that the analysis results are the same whether the project TM is active or not. Is this correct? Is this because I'm not doing any sort of extraction, etc., first?

Finally (since I have your attention ;-!), is there a way to run Analyse so that it ignores any text already in the target language? (I know this is really a question for a new thread.)

Best,

Analyse in Wordfast Apr 27, 2006

Ivan is right; you should be able to analyze a group of documents using Wordfast. To do this, close all documents in MS Word and open the Wordfast window.

You should now see a label saying “Browse” on the Tools tab. Click it and Wordfast will let you navigate to the folder where your documents are located. Choose any of the documents and click Open.

The contents of the folder will appear on the Tools tab in Wordfast and you’ll be able to mark/unmark the individual documents.

[To answer the other question you had: If you have already translated part of a document and now you wish to analyze the rest, I think the easiest thing to do is to save a copy of the document, delete all translated text, and analyze. Or all the translated parts in many places of the document?]

Certain options are not displaying, it seems Apr 27, 2006

Hello, David

I now have Wf5.22 and my experience is the same as with prior versions: if I go to the Tools tab there, the documents I want to analyze will appear ONLY if I have them all already open (or possibly if they were opened and modified recently), and the Browse option does not appear. The only way, then, that I am able to browse and select documents in advance of running Analyse is in Wordfast Office. From what you and Ivan say, I gather that this should not be the

From what you and Ivan say, I gather that this should not be the case, but apart from Milan's suggestion, I don't find a solution. Odd, eh?

As for the second question, the client's documents include some English terminology and computer printout info that I am to ignore. I was wondering if, apart from deleting this text where it appears, there is a way to flag this text as non-translatable or not to be translated so that the Analyse results would be more comparable to what the client is asking. (The client is running the analysis in Trados and I'm running mine in WF, with hopes of getting ourselves into more or less the same "ballpark". WF is returning a higher number of "repetitions" but I'm never sure what that means, since they're not the same as 100% matches or even 95% or 85% matches, and it seems to me therefore not very meaningful.)

Obviously, I'm still learning! Thanks,

Deborah

A short new presentation:

http://www.condak.net/lekce/extract/en/00.html

Extracted text is one file for Analyse. Analyse compare your file against selected TM. If no TM is selected you get information only about analysed file/s.
As text supposed as target language is text in target part of TUs of selected TM.

Success,

Milan

Could You please tell me where I can download wardfast software? Apr 28, 2006

Hi Milan,

I am a new user here. I read somewhere at this website that one can get free wordfast while TRADOs is expensive. Do you happen to know where I could possibly get a free wordfast application?

Thanks a lot for your kind help,

Ning

Hi Ning,

You can download Wordfast at the address above, but it is not free. Please read:

It was always made clear that one day Wordfast would become commercial software - as the manual stated in version 3:

«License cost: refer to our website (http://geocities.com/wordfast) for current pricing conditions.»

Free licenses were delivered in 2002 for a particular installation, and remained valid as long as the install number did not change (the install number could change when formatting/changing the hard disk).

Throughout September 2002, we polled a public translation tool discussion group on how Wordfast should be priced. Wordfast's current price is the result of that poll.

This price is about one-fifth what other translation tools cost; a substantial discount is offered to free-lance translators located in economic zones that can't afford regular software pricing; gratuity is offered to educational and/or humanitarian organizations.

We keep +TOOLS free for all.
