I know how to manage my administrative things, but I am not careful, I don't like it, moreover, in Italy, you need an accountant when you have to pay taxes, so for a few euros more she keeps everything in order evry month: I cannot make the mess I would if I took care of it, I am not responsible for any mistakes, and I can concentrate on translating,

My husband He's a senior assistant-accountant. He helps me out with my income taxes, my VAT, makes sure I keep all my receipts in a safe place and doesn't ask for any payment in exchange...

Of course Mar 10, 2010

Try living and paying your taxes in Italy without the assistance of an accountant

In France, freelancers are practically forced to be member of an "accounting association". They can have a personal accountant on top of that, but it's not mandatory.

I am only member of the association, but since people working there are actually accountants, I think my case doesn't fit in any of the answers.

For tax purposes Mar 10, 2010

I have a chartered accountant who handles my taxes and any tax related issues.

My bank also provides what they call wealth management services, with a consultant who advises me on how to invest my income and make it grow - very important for freelancers

...except the small amount of capital I've accumulated is not from my translation income. Somehow there never seems to be any business income left over to invest.

Yes, when needed. Didn't seem to fit into the 'Yes' options given.

The situation in greece must be similar to that in Italy.

My economist husband. I have no head for figures and it would take me a lot of time that is better spent on translating. He does the accounts and keeps the tax authorities at bay. Routine for someone like him, but a nightmare for me!

He checks my invoices before I send them out too - I once had a client on the phone, very unhappy about the exorbitant rate I was asking for... in GBP. The figure would have been a real bargain in Danish kroner... and the client was happy again as soon

That sort of thing strikes my husband straight away, but one figure is as good as another to me

If he couldn´t do it, I would certainly hire an accountant.

Yes, of course Mar 10, 2010

I'm based in Bulgaria for tax purposes so I guess it would be like trying to pay your taxes in Italy + the Bulgarian factor.

Also, my accountant is very efficient and punctual and I would never be able to be like that with number and paperwork.

I think a translator's mind is usually not prepared to handle accounting matters

I wouldn't be without my accountant!

There's an interesting discussion on the subject in the French forum

This is definitely something I have been considering, and am in need of more and more for every word I translate, and every Euro I earn.

Nice poll by the way!

I did Mar 10, 2010

When I lived in Italy I had an accountant because, as others have pointed out, filling in a tax return there is a labyrinth. Here in the UK it's much simpler, so I do all that side of it myself.

words, not numbers Mar 10, 2010

I work with words and that's all I'm interested in. I hate numbers. So I have the best accountant in the World - Nathan, God bless you!
