Inggris ke Indonesia: Falling By The Wayside, Trees for Change Series No.11, ICRAF Detailed field: Lingkungan & Ekologi
Teks sumber - Inggris Fifty-six nurseries were established between 2007 and 2009. Of these, 24 were ‘spontaneous’, set up by farmers who had been impressed by the activities they had observed from a distance. Field staff from the World Agroforestry Centre, led by Roshetko and Pratiknyo Purnomosidhi, conducted intensive training sessions at the nurseries. “We needed a lot of input,” recalls Usman, a rubber farmer in Rimbong village. “We’d never had any nurseries in this area before, so everything was new to us.”
Some farmers also benefited from study tours to other parts of Sumatra, where rubber farmers have more than doubled their yields during recent years. Prior to the tsunami, average rubber yields in Aceh were a meagre 800–1200 kilograms per hectare per year. Once the produce of the NOEL nurseries reaches maturity, many of Aceh’s farmers will have much more rubber to sell than they had in the past.
Research suggests that there are three factors which determine the success of tree nurseries in Indonesia. First, farmers need access to good-quality planting material. Second, nurseries only succeed if those managing them receive comprehensive training with frequent followup visits. Third, nurseries which want to operate commercially must have good access to the market. In Aceh, the World Agroforestry Centre has supplied nurseries with high-quality clones and provided training. There is also a high demand for seedlings, as government departments are currently undertaking a massive reforestation and rehabilitation programme.

I actually started working as a translator before I graduated, when I was still trying to finish my English Literature degree in Bandung, Indonesia. One of the early jobs, around 2006, that I got was through a friend and it was a subtitling project. I remember that I wasn't paid a lot of money, but it was so fun and exciting as the documentary film that needed the subtitle highlighted important issues in Indonesia.
I graduated in 2008, and started working full-time as an editor in a small advertising company in Bandung. I worked full-time as a translator for 3 years before I eventually decided to work as a freelancer. Over the years, I have translated various documents and finished different projects. I had the experience of working as a full-time editor/translator in one of the biggest publishing companies in Indonesia and I'm still now providing service for them on a freelance-basis. Several of my fiction translations have been published by this company.
Other than that, I have an on-going working relationship with several international NGOs in Indonesia who are working in different fields, including agroforestry, forestry, agriculture, development, capacity building, etc. I'm also still working as a freelance fiction translator for Gramedia Pustaka Utama, one of the largest publishing companies in Indonesia. I learned a lot from the projects that I have completed over the years and I realised that translating is not just work for me, but also a hobby.
I'm familiar with narrative and how to translate a story, which is why I'm now adding my experience as a game LQA. I'm working with one localisation agency in the UK (Universally Speaking). I wouldn't say I'm a gamer but I do play quite a lot of video games, so I'm not a stranger to the language and narrative in various games. Games with a good story are just like good novel, and I like translating both.
