Slide numbers disappearing in Powerpoint

Whenever I work on a Powerpoint file using Tag Editor (Office 2003, Trados 6.5) the slide numbers disappear when I save the file as target back to Powerpoint. I'm sure that reinserting them ought to be a simple matter with "insert slide number" - but it doesn't seem to work as the "slide number" option is already active - but I see the German "Nr." instead of slide numbers. How can I avoid this problem or reinsert the slide numbers? TIA
