German term

Dispomaschine

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Milling machines
The context is a newsletter describing various manufacturing processes and machinery.
Dieses Jahr wurden die ersten [name of milling machine] Generation 1 Maschinen gebaut und als *Dispomaschinen* nach [name of city in US] für den nordamerikanischen Markt geliefert.

The preceding sentences have to do with general marketing issues, and the following sentence describes personnel deployment, so there's really no further context.

My first thought was that this referred to backup machines, but the "North American market" makes this doubtful.

All thoughts welcome!
Thanks, Kevin

Customer response I got a clarification from the end customer: "Maschinen mit definierten Optionen (Grundmaschine) die dann später noch individuell auf den Kunden angepasst werden"

I think your suggestion of "backup" may be correct, Kevin. All the examples I found seemed to relate to meeting short-term need, such as increased production volumes. I also found the term being used in relation to railway locomotives, presumably being kept in reserve for use when needed, for example when others break down. But I'm not totally sure.

on-spec machine

I.e., they have't been ordered/sold (yet); they are being sent "on speculation" – maybe if someone can actually see it, they will order/buy it (which happens a lot at trade fairs)
