Using Venus and Mars in our Solar System as examples show that, just because a planet is in the habitable zone, it does not necessarily become habitable. Strong mitigating factors – usually related to the atmosphere of the planet – can create temperature differences larger than expected. On Venus, for instance, the thick atmosphere has created a ***runaway greenhouse effect*** which traps incident solar radiation and stops it from escaping, causing the temperature to spiral upwards.
