The Italian term 'rubato' (meaning 'stolen' or 'robbed') is frequently used in classical music to describe a certain type of expressive give-and-take in timing terms.
Different types of expressive timing:
1) 'Early rubato'.
This is where the basic tempo of the music (i.e. the accompaniment) is strict, but the melody moves freely within this framework. It is common in baroque music, and also in Swing.
2) 'Later rubato'.
This is where the overall tempo of the music changes
3) 'Ballad rubato'.
This is a form of rubato we are accustomed to in popular music today, which is related to the 'early rubato'. Singers often call it 'back-phrasing'.
4) Affected, non-rhythmic rubato.
This is a style of playing which is common in some concert performances of pieces in dance styles. It is a mannered way of playing which is 'non-rhythmic' in so far as it interrupts the rhythmic flow of the music.
5) Rubato related to movement.
This is a similar type of rubato which is modelled a somewhat mannered style of dance performance. Overdone, it can sound dated, but in subtle quantities, it is the kind of rubato which is ideal in the performance of some ballet variations

Το ballad rubato πρέπει να το κοιτάξω. Όσο για το τελευταίο, μάλλον κάποια περίφραση όπως και στο πρωτότυπο: ρ. το οποίο σχετίζεται με την κίνηση. Ίσως κάποιος γνωρίζει καλύτερα τα σχετικά με το χορό.

Αν καταλαβαίνω σωστά, οι χαρακτηρισμοί 'πρώιμο' και 'όψιμο' αναφέρονται βασικά στο στυλ συγκεκριμένων χρονικών περιόδων της κλασικής μουσικής (το 'πρώιμο' αναφέρεται στην μπαρόκ, και το 'όψιμο' κατά πάσα πιθανότητα στην καθαρά κλασική εποχή) και μόνο έπειτα καθιερώνονται ως γενικότεροι στυλιστικοί προσδιορισμοί. Αν θέλεις να αποδώσεις το στυλ, θα μπορούσες ίσως να πεις 'μελωδικό ρουμπάτο' για το early και 'ομόρρυθμο ρουμπάτο' για το later, αν και είναι ίσως λίγο εξεζητημένο, ειδικά το ο.ρ.
