Byron Janis was not one to ignore the advice of Vladimir Horowitz—not in 1947 anyway. Janis was a nineteen-year-old piano prodigy, stupendously gifted and enormously promising, but still years away from the global fame he would eventually enjoy. Horowitz, by contrast, was Horowitz, already equal parts performer and monument, and arguably the most gifted expatriate pianist Russia had ever produced.
Horowitz had first heard Janis perform four years earlier, when the then fifteen-year-old made his network radio debut with the NBC orchestra. Conductor Arturo Toscanini heard the performance too, phoned Horowitz, and suggested that so talented a boy might benefit from a tutor.
Horowitz, who had never taught before, agreed, and for the next several years, the master coached the student, sometimes on the magnificent piano in Horowitz’s Manhattan apartment, sometimes at Toscanini’s home in Riverdale, New York. No matter where the lessons took
place, Janis came to accept that an instruction from Horowitz was not a thing to be dismissed lightly. So when the occasion arose that he considered doing just that, he surprised even himself.
The suggestion from Horowitz that Janis ignored concerned the way to play Maurice Ravel’s composition Jeux d’Eau, or The Fountain. Horowitz told Janis that Ravel himself insisted the piece be played entirely without
pedal—an odd bit of dictum for a delicate piece that occasionally required a jolt of extra power. Jeux d’Eau without pedal in the sound seemed like it would be a feeble thing indeed.

L’indicazione da parte di Horowitz che Janis ignorò verteva sul modo di suonare la composizione di Maurice Ravel dal titolo Jeux d’eau (Giochi d’acqua). Horowitz disse a Janis che lo stesso Ravel era dell’idea che il brano si dovesse suonare interamente senza l’uso del pedale – un’osservazione alquanto strana per un brano così delicato che aveva bisogno di sprazzi di energia di tanto in tanto. Jeux d’eau senza il timbro del pedale sarebbe risultata davvero spenta.

Hi there,
I am a recent graduate. I obtained my master's degree at the Civica Scuola Interpreti e Traduttori Altiero Spinelli in Milan. My work languages are English, German and Spanish, which I have studied during my bachelor's degree in Genua.
My work experience is related to the curricular internships I did during the master's degree. I learnt above all how to use the CAT tools and how to manage MT. I analysed the outputs of the main MTs and I also did different works of MTPE.
In 2018 and 2019 I also provided translation and subtitling services for two short films directed by Davide Morando.
My current limited experience is certainly balanced by a great desire to start a new working adventure and to never stop learning and improving my skills. I prefer the audiovisual field, but I am also fascinated by professional translations (mainly automotive or medical), and by proofreading and post-editing tasks.
I am a very available person. I am also punctual, trustworthy and precise.
