Texte source - anglais Dr. Audlin looked at the clock on his desk. It was twenty minutes to six.He was surprised that his patient was late, for Lord Mountdrago prided himself on his punctuality. He used to say that punctually is a cumpliment you pay to the intelligent and a reproach you make to the stupid, Lord Mountdrago's appointment was for five-thirty.
There was in Dr. Audlin's appearance nothing to attract attention, He was tall and slim, with narrow shoulders. His hair was grey and thin, and there were a few wrinkles on his face. His eyes were pale-blue, He was not more than fifty, but he looked older. His hands were large, with long , thin fingers. His clothes were dark, his tie was black. The general impression he gave was that of a very tired man.
Dr. Audlin was a psychiatrist. He had adopted the profession by accident, but in the course of time, he had become one of the best psychoanalysts in the country. Many important and renowned people from both Britain and the Continent came to consult him.
It was a quarter to six. Of all the strange cases he had had, Dr. Audlin could remember none stranger than that of Lord Mountdrago. He was the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, an able and distinguished politician. It was generally acknowledged that he was the ablest politician in the Conservative Party. He could have become Prime Minister, But an absurd circumstance prevented it: his father was a peer, and on his death, the son would no longer be able to sit in the House of Commons. Lord Mountdrago was too proud to give up his title, and in these democratic times it is out of the question for a Prime Minister of England to be in the House of Lords. But there was nothing to prevent Lord Mountdrago for continuing to be Secretary for Foreign Affairs in successive Conservative governments and to direct the foreign policy of his country.
Lord Mountdrago had many good qualities. He was very intelligent and worked very hard. He had travelled all over the world and spoke several languages fluently. From his youth he had specialized in foreign affairs. He had courage, insight, and determination. He was a good speaker, clear, precise and often witty.
He had a fine presence: he was a tall, handsome man, a tittle bald and rather stout. In his youth he had been an athlete and had rowed on the Oxford side in the famous boat race. At twenty-four he had married a girl of eihgteen, whose father was a duke and her mother a great American heiress, so that he had both position and wealth, and she had given him two fine sons. In short, he had a great deal to make him a popular and successful figure. He had, unfortunately, greats defects.
He was a fearful snob, intolerably proud. He had very good manners, in general, but he was coldly insolent to those whom he looked upon as his social inferior. He was rude to his servants and insulting to his secretaries. His arrogance was horrible. He knew that he was a great deal cleverer than most people. He had many enemies: he despised them. He did not know what sympathy or compassion was. He had no friends.

Texte source - anglais The coming of the ninetheenth century brought with it a period of cultural change which was notable in many respects: in religion, in philosophy, in the arts, in politics, in ways of live. Romanticism was an entire way of behaviour, and so the word ¨Romanticism¨ refers not only to a literary movement, but to a whole period in the history of man.
Principal characteristics of Romanticism.
-Individualism and the triumph of the ¨self.¨
-A feeling of personal liberty.
-Love of Nature.
-Spirit of rebellion.
-A passion for the unknown and the exotic.
-Idealism.
-Revival of the popular and the traditional.
-Search for new artistic forms.
The age of Romanticism brought about a new type of emotional literature. The serenity of the Age of Reason of the eighteenth century gave way to the most violent emotions: enthusiasm, despair, melancholy, disillusionment.
ENGLISH ROMANTICISM.
Romanticism in England is represented principally by two generations of poets.
1. THE LAKE POETS. WORDSWORTH,COLERIDGE.
They were so called because they lived for some time in the ¨Lake District¨ in the north-west of England. The two most outstanding poets of this period were Willian Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. They published together a collection of Lirical Ballads. The most important elements of this work are: solitary meditation, a deep emotion produced by the contemplation of nature, the presence of a mysterious atmosphere....
2.¨THE REBELDS POETS:¨ BYRON, KEATS, SHELLEY.
The second generation of poets of the English Romantic movement is represented by three young poets: Lord Byron, John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Without constituting a school, these three writers offer many points of resemblance: the three died very young, and within a few years of each other (between 1821 and 1824); the poetry of all three is full of romantic emotion,revolutionary ideas, and notable perfection.

El Romanticismo en Inglaterra está representado principalmente por dos generaciones de poetas:

Se llamaron así porque vivieron durante algun tiempo en el ¨Lake District¨ en el noroeste de Inglaterra. Los elementos más importantes de esta obra son: la meditación solitaria, una emoción profunda producida por la contemplación de la naturaleza, la presencia de una atmósfera misteriosa....
2. ¨LOS POETAS REBELDES¨: BYRON, KEATS, SHELLEY.
La segunda generación de poetas de este movimiento romántico inglés está representada por tres jóvenes poetas: Lord Byron, John Keats y Percy Bysshe Shelley. Sin constituir una escuela estos tres escritores ofrecen muchos puntos de semejanza: los tres murieron muy jóvenes, y con pocos años de diferencia (entre 1821 y 1824); la poesía de los tres está llena de emoción romántica, ideas revolucionarias y notable perfección.

Texte source - anglais High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He was completely covered with leaves of fine gold. For eyes he had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby shone on his sword-hilt. He was very much admired. ¨He was as beautiful as the sun,¨ said a woman.
´Why can´t you be like the Happy Prince?¨ asked a mother to her little boy who was criying for the moon. ¨The Happy Prince never cries for anything.¨ ¨I am glad there is someone in the world who is quite happy,¨ thought a disappointed man, as he looked at the wonderful statue.
¨He looks just like an angel.¨ said the Charity Children as they came out of the catedral. ¨How do you know?¨ said the teacher. ¨You have never seen one.¨¨Ah! but we have in our dreams,¨ answered the children.
One night a little swallow flew over the city. His friends had gone away to Egypt six weeks before, but he had stayed behind, because he was in love with the most beautiful reed. He had met her early in the spring on his way down the river,and had been so attracted by her slim waist that he had stopped to talk to her. But the reed was very proud, and had many relatives along the banks of the river. Besides, she was always playing with the wind. The swallow was disappointed and say good-bye to the reed. Then he flew away. All day long he flew, and at night he arrived at the city. ¨Where will I stop?¨ he said. Then he saw the statue on the tall column. ¨I will stop here,¨ he cried. ¨It is a fine position with plenty of fresh air.¨ So he landed just between the feet of the Happy Prince.
¨I have a golden bedroom,¨ he said to himself as he looked round and preparated to go to sleep. But just as he was going to put his head under his wing, a large drop of water fell on him. ¨What a curious thing!¨ he cried.¨There is not a cloud in the sky, the stars are quite clear and bright , and yet it is raining. The climate in the north of Europe is really very bad.¨
Then another drop fell. ¨I can´t stay here, in the rain,¨ said the swallow, and decided to fly to another place. But before he had opened his wings, a third drop fell, and saw: Ah! What did he see? The eyes of the Happy Prince were full of tears, and tears were falling down his golden cheeks.
