When I am stuck... May 26, 2007

Sometimes, when 15 cm between ears show poor performance and I am stuck on a phrase, I mutter F.R. David's

Words don't come easy to me...

Bei Mir Bist Du Schan May 26, 2007

Bei Mir Bist Du Schan from the Andrews Sisters

Of all the girls I've known, and I've known some,
Until I first met you I was lonesome,
And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light
And this old world seemed new to me.
You're really swell I have to admit, you
Deserve expressions that really fit you,
And so I've racked my brain, hoping to explain
All the things that you do to me.

All the things that you do to me.

Bei Mir Bist Du Schan, please let me explain,
Bei Mir Bist Du Schan means that you're grand.
Bei Mir Bist Du Schan, again I'll explain,
It means that you're the fairest in the land.
I could say 'Bella, bella,' even say 'Wunderbar.'
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are.
I've tried to explain 'Bei Mir Bist Du Schan.'
So kiss me and say you understand.

Bei mir bist du schan, you've heard it all before
But let me try to explain
Bei mir bist du schan means that you're grand
Bei mir bist du schan, it's such an old refrain
and yet I should explain
It means I am begging for your hand

I could say "Bella, bella", even say "Wunderbar"
Each language only helps me tell you grand you are

- incorporating 4 languages - great swing - what more could you what!!

If we're into multilingual songs... May 26, 2007

how about "Darling, je vous aime beaucoup" by Nat King Cole?

Darling, je vous aime beaucoup.
Je ne sais pas what to do.
You know you've completely
Stolen my heart.

Morning, noon and night-time too,
Toujours wondering what to do.
Thats the way I've felt
Right from the start.

Ah, cherie!
My love for you is très, très fort.
Wish my French were good enough,
I'd tell you so much more.

But I hop

And there was a song called "Danke schön, bitte schön, wiederseh'n"
by Eddie Wilson, written about 1960. I was in the RAF in Germany at that time and I remember hearing it sung with a strong southern US accent. I can't find the lyric on the Internet (though there are references to the song), but as far as I remember, it went like this:

Danke schön, bitte schön, wiederseh'n.
Noch ein Bier! Kommen Sie hier!
Danke schön, bitte schön, nichts versteh'n.
I wish I could Sprechen Sie Deutsch!

Taking a slightly different approach... May 27, 2007

... the ultimate interpreter song just has to be NATHALIE by Gilberd Bécaud (don't tell me I'm the only one here old enough to remember it)!

Jenny Made Her Mind Up Jun 5, 2007

Just happened to look up the lyric of this song, and found this verse in it:

Artist: Lyrics
Song: Saga of Jenny Lyrics
Music: Kurt Weill
Lyrics: Ira Gershwin
Book: Moss Hart
Premiere: Thursday, January 23, 1941

Jenny made her mind up when she was twelve
That into foreign languages she would delve
But at seventeen to Vassar, it was quite a blow
That in twenty-seven languages she couldn't say no
Poor Jenn

To Jenny I'm beholden, her heart was big and golden
But she would make up her mind
