It it is a laptop, it may be wise to use the restore CD(s) that came with it, as it is likely thay they will provide additional utilities that are useful in a laptop environment.

Stephen is right. WindowsXP is any day better than Windows98 or WindowsME. The best thing about XP is that it supports unicode, which opens a whole new world for many hitherto unsupported languages, like Hindi.

But XP is demanding of resources. Before going for XP, check that you have at least 64 MB of RAM and 500 MB of free hard disc space on your laptop.
