ROS mampu bereaksi dengan berbagai senyawa di sel dan merusak senyawa, organel, maupun DNA melaluireaksi oksidasi. Salah satu metode organisme menghadapi kerusakan oksidatif adalah dengan memiliki enzim antioksidan, terutama superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), dan catalase (CAT) yang bersama-sama berfungsi mengubah ROS menjadi senyawa non-reaktif.

One of the most researched theory about ageing is the Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Ageing, which states that the cause of ageing is oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) made in mitochondria as a by-product of cellular respiration. ROS is capable of damage and deletion through oxidation of various substances including lipids and DNA. One method for organisms to combat this oxidative damage is by utilizing antioxidant enzymes, especially superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) to convert ROS into non-reactive substances.
