DU SHI KANG wrote: Diversity in language should be fully respected and protected, same as the efforts on retaining the diversity in species.
Language is a heritage of mankind and long history of this world. Many dying languages are respected as the root language (e.g. Latin, Sanskrit). At the same time, languages of minority groups tend to decay with integration, merger and splitting of nations. China is blessed with wonderful language diversity and a large number of population. Cantonese is spoken by more people than languages of many minority groups and it deserves protection.
In my country, Thailand, ethnic groups in the south do not speak Thai on their daily basis except for schools and public organizations. Lands of these people groups were in Islamic culture before integration to the Kingdom of Thailand. The government now promotes Thai language education with slow progress in order to control the local civil unrest etc. If the language propagation is successful, frequent uprises can be calm down but the ethnic group language can recede. This dilemma should be discussed upon the language environment. Regards,
Soonthon L.
