Although I'm not an interpreter I am happy "hearing" this. Interpreters can help people more directly this way and gain more satisfaction in doing so. Those who can't be doctors or nurses can try to be interpreters to fulfill their altruistic need in helping people.

Just avoided today a misdiagnosis at a hospital - the patient was happy to correct the situation with the doctor as there was a crucial misunderstanding - all was corrected and double checked - I was glad to be of help

I am a physician who occasionally uses an interpreter. The pros are good, but when it's a family member the dialogue usually goes like this:

Doctor: "How long have you had the pain?"

Interpreter: " blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah?"

Patient: "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah . blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah! blah blah blah blah... See more

I've found Google Translate to be extremely helpful. I've used it for English=>Korean, Chinese, Polish with excellent success. The grammar may or may not be correct but the patient always seems to understand what I am saying.

When I was studying Japanese as the third language in my 7th year, my instructor asked me questions about sickness and healing. I was quite surprised that those patient jargons were not easy to express by a foreigner. That is, pain has many instances: continuous pain, intermittent pain, biting pain, itchy pain ..... Other symptoms were also explained with many different adjectives. In addition, interpretation is a quick service that demands high skill as well as extra accuracy of language conversion.
