一个多月前从一个叫 Linda John 荷兰人那里接了个活，不是公司，签名里有个 cafe 的 profile 链接，另外还有一个电话。
活不大不小， 8000多词，做完后就发过去了，之后杳无音信，多次去 email 也不回，电话很奇怪，打过去之后是自动语音，说“You do not have access to this number. Your call will be disconnected.” 用 skype 和 手机都不行，语音确实是荷兰那边的，不是移动公司自己的�... See more 一个多月前从一个叫 Linda John 荷兰人那里接了个活，不是公司，签名里有个 cafe 的 profile 链接，另外还有一个电话。
活不大不小， 8000多词，做完后就发过去了，之后杳无音信，多次去 email 也不回，电话很奇怪，打过去之后是自动语音，说“You do not have access to this number. Your call will be disconnected.” 用 skype 和 手机都不行，语音确实是荷兰那边的，不是移动公司自己的，因为是先说荷兰语，再说英语。
此人 email 里说 15 天之内付款的，现在已经过去 1 个多月了。

她的号码是 003 1619875463 （此号码已由她自己公开），我知道 31 是荷兰的区号，后面几位又是什么呢？

The forum rules do not allow discussion of contractors or vendors, especially disclose their information ( see #8 at http://www.proz.com/?sp=siterules&mode=show&category=forum ). The best place to let known such person is the Blue Board. I will take this one as an exception, because the contact information you have are fake.

1) Linda John - not a Dutch name
2) Address in TC looks weird - there is an Amsterdam Avenue at 74th Street, New York, but I couldn't find 74th Street in Amsterdam, Netherlands (well, unless she translated the address from Dutch to English)
3) Says in TC she is an ATA member - not true.

With more and more 'fake' translators and outsourcers appearing on the Net (profiles, blogs, web sites), online translation market is becoming ever messy and in the next few years nobody would trust any translator easily as before without reliable source of verification.
Internet provides opportunities as well as traps. And this is why I tried hard to establish a strong offline presence instead. You can't live as a translator through online jobs alone now anymore nor in the future. My partner and I are working to develop service packages in which translation is only part of the business and we cater mostly to offline communities.

这次真是划算啊，一分钱没拿到。回头想想，确实是我太不小心了。
Kevin，建军，看到你们的回贴，心里很温暖。受骗了，心里总是有些心灰意懒。
为了谋生，在专心做翻译之前，我曾经写过一段时间的书，2006年我出版了本《英语正音绝招》，书卖得不错，还在北京西单书城的畅销书架上被推荐过。现在书已经重印了三次（按出版社的说法）。偶尔还有学生在书店买到了我的书，找我签名：）。该书的成功给我了很大的信心，接连着又与三个出版社签了合同。
其中有一本是为安徽一个出版社译一本书，活是学校另一位老师找我做的，但合同是我和出版社签的。书译出来了，发过去了。左等右等没有回音，打电话过去一问，人家说出版计划改变，书不出了，但稿费照给。书不出虽然是出版社违约，但能拿到钱也不错。等了一段时间，钱也没拿到，气也生了，威胁起诉的话也说了，钱照样拿不到。
这件事情给我很大的打击，后来就再也捡不起出书的劲头了。现在翻译也被骗了，本来翻译就不是个好活，做译者就是做宅男，没社会，没朋友，没阳光地做。前景也不明朗，市场也不健康。不知自己还愿意做多久。

Dallas不必灰心氣餒，受到了教訓更須積極開拓客戶群，只要有一定的客戶基礎，想出恰當的風險管理辦法，以翻譯養家活口還是大有可為。仔細看就可以發現這裡有許多人都是這樣成功地謀得生存。

你讲的风险控制对我非常有启发。做一件事情一般都会存在风险因素，把它做为一种客观存在的因素对待，认真进行分析控制才是业者应当做的事情。我是有些过于情绪化了。大俗话说："吃一堑，长一智"。但没有你的提醒，这长出来的一智就可能是因噎而费食。

The first mistake you made was not asking the lady to provide some references who had long term business relations to her. The second mistake you made was not making a call to the number before you start translating and/or before you deliver your service. These two mistakes are fatal, according to my husband who is used to having personal relations to his business partners even when they have never met. "Trust is good, but controll is better," so Lenin. "Jobs are good, but pays are better," my husbi would say.
My husband would say, "Why do you take on a job if it is not of your interest? If it is of your interests, you must make sure that you can realize your interests with earnest works and deliveries. The other way around would be as well true. You can never expect people take on jobs without their interests. So, the first step of doing business professionally is to make sure and ensure each other's interests. This very first step helps you establish mutual trust. Based on the trust established between you and your clients, customers and providers, you assign credits to them which are the risks you can take and are willing to take. Otherwise, just drop the transactions for they may do you more harm than good. Note, the pays of your interests can be either money, priveledges or something/anything which can turn into "cash" now or sometime later. No one can cheat you unless you let him/her."
Now, you might have figured out where my husband and I come from. May you be wise! Protect your interests, especially the long term ones! Follow the professional rules and don't take trust for a matter of course. No pay ensured, no trust. No trust established, no credit. No credit granted, drop the transaction, especially when you are doing online business. Know yourself and you'll get to know your clients. 但每次的活儿都不太大，最大的也就两千字左右。
但是由于我做的是兼职，而且现在一是我的生活水平比以前好得多了，二是在这个网站上也被外国人骗了（原来以为只有自己中国人喜欢骗人），所以我现在也没心情做稿件了，基本上不做翻译活儿了。
现在就连经常合作且相互之间信誉都很好的翻译公司找我做稿件，我也以很忙为借口给推了。

建议对PROFILE可疑或没有PROFILE的客户先收订金，不愿意做就拉倒，也不差他们那些钱。
另外，Linda John这个英文名似乎很牵强，先不论其是否为荷兰名。

The number does not exist. There is no such an area code in holand as 61. Skype is nice as it promted me 'doesn't exist ' message . It amused me that the dutch autoreply audio said 'no access ' instead of ' doesn't exist.'
