Some of my hobbies can be quite expensive and all of them require time, it keeps me motivated and organised. They are also a great way to keep myself busy and maintain a healthy mental state when there isn't a lot to do. I wish everybody would find something they really love doing and would be able to afford it both in terms of time and money. | | | | Jamal El Jaidi Inggris Local time: 15:04 Anggota sejak (2025) Inggris ke Arab + ... | Poll: Have hobbies helped you regain a sense of control over your career or work life? | Jan 22 |
Hobbies can provide a much-needed escape from the demands of daily life, such as work, household chores, stressful deadlines, and family commitments that can overwhelm us at times. Engaging in a hobby—whether it's music, sports, or any relaxing activity—can significantly improve our day and help it go more smoothly. | | | | Zea_Mays Italia Local time: 16:04 Inggris ke Jerman + ... | using AI chatbots for your forum posts | Jan 22 |

No, I have hobbies and can add more but though I do have more time at my disposal at the moment, it's not the same as when your career or working life are in the state they are in at the moment, due to the present circumstances. They are no substitute though they would help in normal circumstances when side by side but not as substitutes for lack of job offers.

a great deal of recognizability... as someone to be trusted to use own brain, right?
Having hobbies is for sure a good thing for general satisfaction with life, but I struggle to see how hobbies could 'help you regain a sense of control over your career or work life'? I am a Spanish tutor that likes to explore new ways to teach and learn languages. Learning languages is also my favorite hobby. One day, I looked at some resources for teachers from Duolingo For Schools, so I reviewed, and adapted them for my classes. In other words, when translation stopped being predictable (thanks to AI hype), did you find something else to hold on to?
The wording feels telling.
This poll wouldn’t be asked in a stable market, because in my view it reflects the fact that many translators currently have less work and less control, largely due to AI hype and shifting client expectations.
Framing it in terms of “hobbies” seems more like a "band-aid" than a career discussion or something else.
